Well I have applied for a target & premise handgun permit & have been disapproved 'cause I supposedly have 3 Domestic Violence incidents on me which I have no idea about... I have never been arrested or have had any officers come to my door unless it was a friend of mine... For what it says in the notice is that the incidents happened in 2002, 2003, & 2005... I have been with the same woman since 2001 and neither of us has any idea what any of this is... 1st & most important is that I want to get this cleared and then continue to pursue the target & premises permit... My wife paid for all of the range membership & all my paperwork for the city as a gift & it is all going to waste. I am currently unemployed and need help & or guidance as to what to do. I can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you.

You're going to have to let us know at least where you're located in order to help you out properly.

And word to the wise - don't post your phone number on the internet like that. We may not actually be anonymous on here, but you should still be careful with what you put out there for the world to see.

Lastly, good luck getting your issue resolved. :)

Well, since you don't have any money to spend, you are going to have to do all the footwork yourself. Fortunately, since you are un-employed, you have plenty of time on your hands.

There must be some appeal process where ever it is you are, by which you can get the details about the "incidents" where you were denied. If it isn't you, it's probably someone else with the same name, or perhaps someone transposed a a digit in your SS# when doing the background check.

Beyond that, it's pretty much 1-800-get-alawyer.

Good luck!

Welcome aboard....

First thing to do is find a good lawyer.... I can recommend a couple for OH, but I think you're in New York....

Most likely it's a case of a same (or similar) name, or maybe street address mixup, or an identity theft thing, but you'll probably have to pay a lawyer....

If your permit process allows for an appeal, you and/or your lawyer should ask for documentation on these charges. A common name could do you a lot of damage, but being able to disprove even one of them may be good enough to get some kind of reconsideration.

(I suppose I should look up "718" in my area code book :), but it's not a very good idea to post a real phone number here.)

(Yup - definitely New York.... I'd move :D.)

Another possibility is a low-level citation (even overtime parking) might have been improperly "coded" into the "system". Since Misdemeanor DV is a gotcha, it wouldn't take much.... How you'd get three of those, I don't know....

Regards,

First, edit your post and get rid of your phone number.

Second, you should be able to get a copy of your criminal history from your state police dept for a small fee. I'd get that, take it to whoever ran the background check, and show them that you have no such marks on your record. Since you're unemployed, going to these agencies in person will be quicker and get faster results than anything through the mail.

Thank you everyone... i did edit my post...lol... Well as far as my name it really isn't that common that's #1, #2 I had been told by my range from the beginning that I needed to get my history (abstract I think its called) from the courts and i did and all it showed was a $25.00 ticket that I received many years ago... I have never been in trouble with the law and only at most have gotten a few parking tickets.. I tried to get the info about who did the calls and they told me they can't give me that info to protect the person that made the reports....& yes im sorry i am in NY...

You need to call and make an appointment down at 1PP to the licensing division, and take this information, as well as a copy of your application and denial down there. It has been a few years since I went through the NYC licensing, but this was the appeal procedure then to sort out errors. You should be talking to someone at 1PP, not here!T

Thanks Oro, but i have spoken to my investigator also and all he said was that he can't do anything about it 'cause once he punches my name into the computer that is what comes up. I have checked all of the above options and no1 wants to tell me anything for the safety of the individual who made the complaint, calls, or what have you... Thanks for the advice though, I really appreciate all the help all of you have given me so far especially being a newbie here....lol... Anything else that anyone can think of so that I may try please hit me up. Thanks again.

Punches My Name

Your name?

Sounds like someone else's name, just happens to be same as yours.

When I moved to Las Vegas I had to demonstrate the the power company that I wasn't this other guy whose name was the same (unusual) spelling, with the only difference being the middle initial.

I had to pull my SSN card and show them, "see, that's NOT me."

Took twenty minutes to convince the gal that I hadn't faked my ID to be a different guy. "Do you think, for a moment, that if I was trying to be someone else, I would keep this same first name spelling the same way, and only change the middle initial??"

Have the guy enter your SSN instead of your name, and see what comes up.

Do one of the free credit check reports and see if someone has stolen your identity. You can also do a criminal history check via the internet in case your identity is being used for purposes absent monies. Law enforcement runs into problems all the time with stolen identities. Individuals get arrested without identification. They memorize someone else's SS/ DOB/ use that as ID. Jails across American are stuffed full and criminals know they will, sooner or later, get kicked or allowed to bail out without producing ID. At times they apply for and obtain a picture ID/drivers license with and another persons DOB/SS/address. Indiana BMV's have, in the past, had the DL's blanks and machines stolen and we had false ID's all over the place being used by criminals. They would commit crimes and if caught, use the fake ID, post bail or wait to be OR'd and disappear. Illegal aliens are always arrested without no way of truly identifying them. If it is a seriuos crime then they are not allowed bail or OR'd but even if they do prison time how does the government really know who they are. They will be photographed, fingerprinted, and assigned a name but no official documents exist. I would get right on top of this and straighten it out. Good luck!
