If they're in a trap, .22 lr to the head so you don't mess up the pelts. If you're doing some sort of beaver control and shooting them in the wild, go for the .22 magnum. Beaver are big (for rodents) and tough.

Beaver with .22 LR

i took this 44 lb beaver in the mountains of colorado a few years ago with a Marlin 880 SQ. used CCI Mini-mag HP's, 2 of 'em.

Someone mentioned that Beavers are big...in fact Beavers are the largest rodent in North America I believe.

Are you required to use rimfire, or are you only limited to .22 caliber and below?

(And others with more know-how have already made recommendations, so I won't bother.)

Actually, after taking a second look at the state regulations, I'm restricted to .22 rimfire only. The .17 HMR sure does sound like fun, though.

Well since it is now .22 lr only, that's what to use.

For those of you recommending the .17 HMR, what's the largest beaver you have ever seen? I am wondering if maybe you think that they are all in the 10 lb. range or so. Biggest one I have seen in Nebraska was 53 pounds. I have seen pictures of beaver in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that the trapper said went just shy of 70 pounds.

From the 2006 Arkansas Hunting Guidebook

Furrbearer hunting methiods: Furbears may be taken with archery equipment ,firearms NO LARGER than .22 caliber rimfire or shotguns with shot no larger than T shot.

So in other words 17 HMR is perfectly legal.

Or you can scroll halfway down the page at http://www.agfc.com/rules_regs/hunting_regs_all.html

Circumstances are the key to success with the lowly .22. Chances are good you haven't spent well over $10k on a beaver hunt. You haven't been out for 7 days on horseback looking for one, only to finally spot one quartering away at 350 yards with failing light in a blizzard on your last day.

See what I'm getting at?

You're more likely able to wait till you get exactly the placement opportunity you need. That goes in spades if you're trapping.

.22 Minimag HPs have worked great for my wife and I.

allow me to correct myself

I picked up the hard copy of the 2006-07 hunting regulations, and it has the exact same verbage you posted. I guess we are both right.
