A dorm very close to my sister's got invaded and robbed last week. The claremont colleges are lower-ivy (prestigious private school, but not quite ivy league) and are built like oxford (lots of small colleges clustered together, each essentially independent).
My sister has a dorm a in the same cluster. There are 3 girls in the one-room door, and there is no peephole although the door is extremely solid (you will need a very heavy battering ram).
I wanted to give her one of my Rem. Mod 11 shotguns (she's 18) but because there is no way to keep it secure, and because she has two roommates - one of which is slightly emotionally disturbed - that's not a viable option.
I'm thinking of one of the new $300 tasers, combined with serious OC spray (she already has that). Further, I want to hook up a little camera to the outside of the dorm, with a little CC screen inside. Problems with the "who is it?" approach lie in duress entries and the like.
Anybody got a line on a cheap CC setup, hopefully for less than $200? the problem is that the screen needs to be real small and wall mountable since dorms are real short on space. also, both camera and screen have to use AC power. since dorm rules do not allow drilling of the walls, I plan to simply stick the camera to the outside wall (hopefully it wont get stolen).
Oh, and I made a point to reiterate: throw them your entire wallet. you can replace it. but if they try to tie you up or stuff you into a closet, fight them tooth and nail. holler like you're pooping nails...
