What is a good , reliable , and not too expensive double barrel shotgun ?
I am wanting one but dont know jack about them. I have a Mossberg 500, Remington 870 and a Kessler Westchester bolt-action but I am new to the double-barrels .

In a S&S, you can get good and reliable, but not for, "not to expensive"! Unless you aren't going to shoot it all that much? I'm talking about a new gun, not a used gun...

Savage for used SxS running about $600 will be your cheapest best bet. Otherwise, plan on 1,000 for a different cheap SxS like an Ugartechea from Spain.

Current modern SxS guns that are worth considering as far as barrel regulation and decent triggers will include the now discontinued S&W Elite Gold up to the very decent AyA 4/53 running about $3,000.

SxS that are very nice start closer to $5000 and go to about $10,000 before it become mostly a cosmetic thing. SxS guns are the hardest to regulate and make work perfectly, so labor costs run things up a lot very quickly - beware of cheap new guns as that means there will have been shortcuts in the areas previously mentioned

weatherby has a decent SxS for $2200, O/Us like berreta are $1.800 or so...

cheap stuff is stuff to avoid

My old gunsmith made double rifles in 45 basic from SXS shotguns, when I asked him about regulating the barrels he asked me if I had ever heard of a computer. Regulating today with computers and lasers is not the chore it was in years past. Clyde's guns would put two shots within an inch of each other at 100 yards. My Tikka double rifle is user adjustable for regulation via a simple wedge system.

I have a half dozen SXSs /O/Us - all but one of them used (and most older than I am). A couple of Ithacas, a Lefever, a Parker, a Savage 430 (O/U). I didn't pay more than $400 for any of them.
I hunt with the Parker and the LeFever regularly. I take them all out for Trap occasionally.
Every one of them comes up to my shoulder and eye like it was made for me...nothing points like a SXS.
A popular and frequently recommended used SXS is the Savage 311. They can be had for under $300, sometimes way under.
About 15 years or so ago, I bought one of the then newly imported Baikal IZH-43s. It has proven to be a nice, reliable, straight shooting shotgun. Less than $400 at the time.

Try a Stoeger Coachgun, their 20" side-by-side. I use one for Cowboy Action Shooting. (10 years onthe same gun.) Solid, reliable, and value-priced.

The same basic gun is also sold as the Uplander, with 26 or 28 inch barrels.

Both versions can be had with single-trigger actions, or conventional double triggers. You can have fixed or screw-in chokes.

I agree with Pete.Have much of the same.Cruise the pawn shops.Write down name, model, ser #,etc. Put on this forum.Folks will be glad to advise.Examples-12 ga Hamart Belgian made sxs $385,N.I.D.16ga sxs $375,Ithaca 20 ga sxs $380,Riverside 16 ga sxs rabbit-eared $370.Remington Spartan 28ga brand new $545.P.S.-the Hamart is very rare and unique in its conformation. Many times pawn shops have no idea what they've got!A little research and you can end up with a class sxs for little money. If you are so inclined, what looks like old grungy wood can be refinished to former glory.I have been asked at the skeet range repeatedly about my old sxs's.Patience, sandpaper, steelwool, and 30 hand rubbed coars of tung oil can make a world of difference!:)

The Winchester M24 is a real good, nice, reliable, durable SxS...16ga is OK too for upland hunting or bunnies or turkey or..........I haven't priced them for a while but I'd guess the $700 aint' all that bad IF it's clean & tite. The 16ga is making a come back of sorts too, so lots of ammo choices are coming along. They have that neat round action...different from most. They are a bit on the clunky side, thick wrist & fore end but not unwieldy. Take it home and let us know how it is.

Or if you want new check out the line of CZ SxS shotguns...find their web site and look them over. Est they'd be around $800-$1000 retail.

The 16 ga Model 24 is built on the 20ga frame making it a very nice handling shotgun, not clunky at all. They came in 2 versions a 26 in IC/Mod like mine and a 28 inch Mod/Full. I use mine for upland game and well as clays games...

How about getting a decent made old double, and fixing it up? Like this Remington 1900 my dad bought in the "40's" from some folks who were moving and selling their stuff. After it made it through all of us kids and ended up in my lap, i fixed up and still use it often.

It's been a very reliable shotgun that's put tons of meat on our table since dad bought it.
