Does anyone have an opinion on .223 rifles made by Double Star? Are they a good value for the money? What about the usefulness of an Eotech sight on an AR-15?

Thanks,

Drakejake

I can't comment on a Double Star, but I have not heard anything bad about them. I have a friend with an Eotech, and he loves it. My soldier son had options on the type of electronic sight to choose from. His unit settled on either an Aimpoint or an ACOG. His unit (only his unit) did not have good luck with the Eotech in their deployment to Iraq. He and I have Aimpoint ML2's on our carbines (what he used in Iraq) and his primary M4'gery has an TA31 ACOG (he has 2 M4'gery's).

My friend has had great luck with his Eotech, and I have heard glowing reviews on them. They appear to be great sights.

Don't have any experience with Double Stars, either, but EOTechs are generally excellent. The main downside I'd think is that the buttons can be a little tricky to work with under duress (i.e. have your sight on and light level set before the gun fight starts -- but that's a good idea with an AimPoint too). On the plus side you get that really nice 1 MOA dot and the outer donut of death that makes for really quick shooting at close range and provides a pretty solid hold-over for very close range shooting where the zeroed dot will be shooting high.

Basically echoing HorseSoldier - the Eotechs are probably the best sight for close range rapid target acquisition, and the controls are terrible.

I have a couple of DoubleStar rifles and rifles built on J&T Distributing kits...

(DoubleStar and J&T Distributing are the same people...)

The DS and J&T stuff is all top notch...

I also have Eotech 512s on a couple of 20in flattop rifles and really like them. As mentioned, the brightness of the HWS reticle must be adjusted to the exterior environmental lighting if you don't want a reticle that is too bright or too dim...

Other than that, it's hard to beat the Eotech for fast target engagement since you don't have to line up any sights. Just put the 1moa dot on the target and shoot...

I have the EOtech and it works well. It's very fast to get on target or shoot without a good cheekweld. You don't want to use it to shoot groups; yes you can do it but there's better options for that.

One more thumbs up for DSC and J&T.

J&T upper arrived perfect a couple weeks ago, shoots perfectly. I put it on a DSC lower. All works well.

Prompt shipping, good prices, good hardware, near-infinite options.

I don't have any experience with the double star rifles but I have an EO tech and it's awesome. As said, you have to adjust the brightness to work ok with the current lighting but once it's set it rocks. Very quick target acquisition, doesn't matter if your cheek weld isn't consistent, works in any condition, is compatible with night vision (provided you get a NV compatible version) and and extremely tough. It has no magnification so out past 100 yards you aren't going to be putting every round in the same hole usually (but its a 1moa dot as opposed to a 4moa dot like the aimpoints).
I'd recommend getting the AA battery model since they last much longer than the other version and the batteries are more common (and isn't a whole lot bigger).

I never had heard of Double Star until a few months ago. A fella I work with has one and loves it. So, after I bought my Bushmaster, I decided to try my hand at a build, and I bought a Double Star lower. It has been every bit as good as my Bushmaster, and I think the quality, fit and finish are outstanding.

On par with DPMS

Is not a complement.....

Other than that, like most heard good things about DS, have pawed a few and found no issues that would keep me from looking at them closer.

I love my eotech, just put the red donut of death on whatever your shooting and blast away with both eyes open.
