Double vision sight picture

I'm right handed and right eye dominant, which would seem to be a good fit...except I have a bad astigmatism in my right eye and haven't had much luck correcting it. So I shoot handguns and shotguns with both eyes open, right handed and rifles with scopes left handed. Learning to shoot left handed after my whole life shooting right handed hasn't been the easiest. But it's the only way I can see through a scope without blurry cross hairs.
Thing is, I had to figure out what was going to work for me then commit to it. Think that's what everyone's gotta do.

Hello all,

So I just got a laserlyte and a couple targets. They are hoot, get some if you haven't tried them, especially with the crazy shortage stuff going on. I got Mrs Bullitt to get into it a little bit, so we started trying to have her shoot with both eyes open. Next question was pretty much "which set of sights or which target (we had 1 target) do I aim at..." I was not quite sure how to answer that lol.

She has been shooting pistol off and on for about a year and has become pretty good at it. Trouble is that she is left eyed and right handed, so naturally she closes her left eye and does quite well with long guns etc. Not super troubled with the support side eye dominance, but usually people don't encounter an issue here with handguns, especially shooting isosceles stance as far as I know? What more, it seems to be something different than typical dominant eye stuff.

Here is the odd part... when she uses both eyes and focuses on the front sight, she will consistently see 2 targets that are pretty much indistinguishable, so much so that she cant visually tell which is actually there. I see nothing like that going on no matter what I do. If she focuses on the target, she will see 2 pistols/sights.

This happens even if she switches hands, tilts the pistol, changes shooting stance, anything I can think of. In fact, take the gun out and she can replicate it with her thumb and her arm out stretched. I simply kinda see through my thumb by comparison.

Closing her left eye and shooting right side makes the issue go away completely and the same on the other side.

Any ideas would be helpful. Does everyone see 2 targets and just picks one except me lol?

I get the double image as well. For me my right eye sees the left image, and my left eye sees the right image.

Your dominant eye should naturally go to which ever image that eye sees. In my case my right eye is dominant, so I automatically go to the left image

The more common problem for me is that I have a choice: Either I can wear reading glasses and see the gun sights or not wear them and see the target, I have experienced a little of the "double vision" thing but it seems to resolve OK.

I am studying to see if shooting glasses with magnification lenses will help.

This is of course, using iron sights,,,,,

Some very informative posts here.

You probably have something other than just astigmatism going on. With just astigmatism, the reticle should be clear, as you point of focus, (the eyepiece of the scope is well well within the focused zone for most astigmatics. (particularly if you have the dioptric focus ring on the back of the scope set correctly.) You would have to be classified 'low vision' before even the eyepiece is too close to focus on. A hyperope (far sighted) with a high plus perscription and astigmatism would fall into this problem before a high myope with astigmatism, like myself, but either way, you may have other issues.

You like many of us here have presbyopia, caused by the natural aging and hardening of the crystalline lens in the eye.
Setting the length of focus for the shooting sport you are engaged in is the key. That is, be prepared to get several different pairs of shooting glasses if you want optimum sight for each type of shooting. There are several optical places that work with shooters, staffed by shooters, that can get you what you need. Morgan Optical is one, Decot is another.

It's very possible I have more than just an astigmatism. That was the only issue brought up by the optometrist, but her attempts at corrective lenses have so far failed. My vision is perfect in my left eye still, and I can focus the scope to where the cross hairs are clear, but the target becomes distorted. I did find that if I use the rear scope cover with a 3/16" hole in the center, I'm able to focus cross hairs and target at 25 and 50 yards...once I finally find the target in the little bitty hole.
