Dove hunting with 590, can I use a longer barrel?

Hey everyone. A search didn't come up with the answer, so I'll just ask it.

I got invited on a dove hunt. Never done it before so now I have to figure out what shotgun to use. All I have are short barrelled HD style shotguns; an 870 poolice, some 1897s, and a 9200 that doesn't work . I do have a 20" Mossberg 590A1. Can I drop in a 24" or 28" barrel? If so, which length is preferable? Thanks.

Upon reflection, it might just be easier to get a dedicated dove gun. I figure that a new barrel is about $140 or so, plus I'll have to plug the mag tube and probably take off the rear ghost ring to use a front bead. A new Mossberg 835 is only $218 and an 870 express $240. Any opinions?

I have a 590, too, but this is one that's tricky to call.

The 590's magazine tube and retention nut setup are different from that of the Model 500, and the only barrels for the 590 are short cyinder bore jobs like yours and mine.

At the very least you'd have to also swap out the magazine tube with your barrel along with the retaining cap. However, I don't know if a 500 magazine tube will thread into a 590.

I solved the problem with some Bubba'd up sights and a Polychoke. It's ugly, but it works.

Define "doesn't work". I (or someone else) might be able to help you through the problem. I'll also assume that you have a longer (28") barrell for it ???

Then again, I hate to have anyone waste an excuse to buy another shotgun.

How about you go ahead and buy another shotgun while we work on the the problem with your 9200 ??

The 9200 is the "Jungle Gun" model, so it has a 18.5-20" barrel (not really sure). Anyhoo, it jams almost every round as new shells hang up on the top of the receiver and the bolt won't close. Usually a swift rap to the charging handle will close the bolt. It seems like the shell is somehow getting hung up on something at the top of the receiver or chamber, or they are not coming off of the feed ramp properly. There are what look like dremel marks on the top of the receiver (inside) in what may have been an attempt to smooth out any projections and help feeding.

I though maybe the bolt didn't have enough force to close properly so I replaced the main spring with no improvement. I have heard that the jungkle guns want full power OO buck or something. But it seems to extract fine so I am not sure if that is the problem.

I LOVE the gun, it's weight and pointability are superb. So if anyone has any ideas, I'm more than receptive I bought it knowing it had issues, did it for a friend who was hurting for money at the time.

BTW, I'll probably just get a new shotgun if the dove hunt goes through. I'd like to get into skeet/trap some more and it would work well for that, enough to justify a new gun, IMHO. But which one? Any clear choices in the sub $350 crowd?

Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88 will be well under $350 new. I say those two models because I am a Mossberg kind of guy.

With some looking you can probably find a Rem 870 Express (?) at your price point.

For your fast to swing-n-point type of bird hunting (Yeah...doves are FAST!) I would pick the 24"-26" barrel model.

You might find a used but still serviceable barrel for your 870 at a reasonable price.

I poked around on Mossberg's website but I didn't see extra Mdl 590 barrels listed.

Agreed. Heck, you can get a new Maverick at WallyWorld for under 150 bucks, why would you want to mess with that 590? Tacticool shotguns are worthless in the hunting fields, doing anything important. They'll impress your gunshop ninja buddies, but I have never ever fired a shotgun at someone, never been in a war, never worked as a cop. I've killed an aweful lot of game with a shotgun, though. I got no use for tacticool crap, would never bust a cap with one if I had one. What's the point?

My pump M500 Mossberg will work in self defense, but a 590 won't work on geese. I go with the more versatile field gun, myself. If you wanna do both, get a M870 Remington. You can get extended mag tubes, short barrels, long barrels, and they all will interchange. Dress it up for the job at hand, much more versatile system. I prefer my Mossy in the field, but the 870 is a good shotgun.

Check to make sure that:

1) You have an O-ring installed.
2) That the action bar parts are installed in the correct order.

I use my Mossy 500C, with the long barrel.

It was $215 at Big 5, with an 18" and 28" barrel. The long barrel has screw in chokes.

Works great. Killed many quail, pheasant and dove with it...

But can you not get a fairly inexpensive 870 barrel for your 870P?

Call me weird, but I'd just rather own two shotguns than one... They ain't THAT expensive and a new 870 barrel is probably going to eat up $150, so why not just get something for hunting like a Maverick, a Mossy, or an 870 express???? JMHO, though. I can't own enough guns for some reason. It's a desease.

Heh heh, my 870 is all pimped out, probably should be under that "Show me your HD shotgun" thread. Collapsible stock, pistol grip, electronic sight, surefire forend, etc. Way too much work to change it over to something hunting-worthy. If the dove hunt is a go I think I'll just get a new shottie, hey, the wife said I could go so she can't complain if I get a new gun! I'm thinking a 500 since I'm a lefty and I like the Mossberg safety location.

I'll try and mess with the 9200 this week and make a new post about it. Thanks for the advice.
