I went out wednesday to go dove hunting the first time. I only had a mossberg 590 with a bead sight and the heatshield so i made a plug to make it legal to use and took it out. The two guys i wentwith used a couple of stoeger pumps idk which model but the could handel 3 1/2 inch loads. well it looked pretty funny seeing thier camo shotguns made for hunting next to my combat style all black shotgun. well at first it was kind of odd since the barrel was short at 20 inches and my first time out i had to adjust to know my range . After about 25 shells and finally got my distance and pattern down i bagged a dove. Once i reloaded my pockets it wasnt long before i got my Bag limit. I bagged 10 doves was very satisfied . the 590 performed perfectly for me though we all claim PETA gives the doves free pcp . we say that because id shoot the dove in kill range 2-3 times before it hits the ground go over to it and see it try to fly or run away. at first they made fun of me for dumping the magazine in one bird but by the end we were all shooting the doves 2-3 times. one dove survived 2 shots in the air landed tracked it it tried to fly away shot it twice more for good measure and guess what my friend had to chase it down and finish it still. all in all it was a fun experience and i found the 590 effective. also dove hunting actually allows me to justify buying a bayonet. you see the doves simply need to be finished off most the time and a bayonet is easier than smashing its skull with the buttstock or pulling off the head.

Speaking from theory I have learned so far, It sounds to me like you really need a choke in order to get a tight enough pattern for a humane, quick kill.
