I recently bought a dpms sportical and Id like to put a quad rail on it instead of the hand guard that it came with. I would like to mount a quad rail where the top rail is at the same height as the top rail, but the problem is I dont know which ones will accomplish this. No one around here carries anything of this sort and Im afraid to order anything without knowing it will fit properly.

If anyone has any advice Im all ears

The Sportical has a standard height receiver rail. Any rail system from a reputable manufacturer will do what you want. Basically, stay away from NcStar, Leapers, UTG, Target Sports, and the like; and you'll be fine. Daniel Defense, Midwest Industries, Surefire, Troy Industries, and Yankee Hill are all solid choices. I'm probably leaving a few out. Pay attention to the weight, and get the lightest rail set you can find for the money you want to spend.

I put a badger ordnance free float on my sportical. it'll work just as easily as a rock river or stag setup. as long as you have the right tools and know how it'll do just fine.

What the rail will do: Cost $150 -300. It then accepts a light or other accessory.

What the rail won't do: improve accuracy beyond the undisturbed MOA the barrel already had. Milspec is 2MOA, it cuts about a 1/2MOA deviation if you sling up tightly in long range shooting: hand on the mag well, about zip.

That's one expensive flashlight mount. The Army does it as an institutional compromise to clamp all that "SOCOM" kit on 50 different user inventories. The Marines kept it optional on the M16A4 and still use handguards.

The key phrase is "rail height," meaning the rail will be the same as the one on the upper. Most are, the few that aren't are obvious. What many won't do well is bridge the gap from upper to rail with exactly even spacing that still accepts a mount, which is moot, as noone recommends doing it anyway. If the optic is that long, they recommend a cantilever base.

Boils down to, why quad rail it when the optics and mount makers don't recommend bridging, and offer rail strips to mount lights as you need it? It comes down to being a free float tube, and that will only protect the barrel against sling or bipod tensioning. Shooting at those ranges implies something more than the standard 2MOA chrome barrel - and would be the first item to spend money on.

When you really get into understanding why the Army does some things, it's not what we think at all.

Thanks for the advice you guys

I really want the quad rail so I can have a quick access point for a bipod, and a place to put front sights that arent mounted on the gas block. Im looking into into the Daniel Defense EZ CAR 7.0 rail system, but I cant really get a definite confirmation on whether it will fit properly.

No reason not to get a quad rail if you want one. I use mine for flashlights, AFG, bipod, etc.

I have a Daniel Defense Omega 7. It is more expensive, but it free floated. If you can get away with modular FF tubes, i like the Midwest Industries SS series, Samson Evolution or Troy (forget model). The tubes are lighter and cheaper, but you get to bolt on a couple of rails for accessories. The Samson Revolution uses a milspec barrel nut and is a very easy install. The Samson Evolution will be on my next build.

It's a fact barrels bend and change Point of Aim, stressing a free float mounted on the same joint with leverage at it's opposite end moves them, too - and any sight mounted on them. If the bipod deviates the tube, the sight deviates, too, and the result isn't much better, if at all.

Free float means keeping external pressure off the barrel AND it's integrally mounted sight. It's why a free floated NM rifle with pencil barrel can outshoot a recce with HBAR - a sling will move the rail mounted sight around.

Moot point if accuracy isn't the goal. But it is the exception to free floats that most don't realize.

Yes when I first posted I didnt realize that dpms offered a sportical in .223 as well. Sorry for the confusion.

Im guessing thats why Im having such a hard time finding one that fits my .308

I have a 16" carbine build with a 9" quad rail that has nothing mounted on it, save a Troy folding front Battlesight and rail covers.

Why? Because I like a little more weight up front, as it improves the balance of the gun for me.

To each his own.

So the Omega 7 will fit the dpms sportical 308?
LR-308 Sportical changes things, and the .308 based AR rifles aren't currently standardized. So, no the Omega series won't fit. You'll need a 7.62 Lite Rail with the DPMS LR-308 bbl. nut if you want a DD rail. You're going to have to measure your upper at the charging handle opening; see this guide from Troy Industries - http://troyind.com/manuals/DPMS_RECEIVERS_COMPARE.pdf - and call DD to make sure the Lite Rail will line up with your LR-308 upper. Alternately, you can order the correct height (HP or LP) TRX-308 tube from Troy - http://troyind.com/battlerails/trx-battlerails . Troy also offers a single length of their MRF rail for the various .308 ARs - http://troyind.com/ /battlerails/troy-battlerail-mrf-308-13-8 . The only .308 Sportical drop in rail I can find is this one from MI - http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=292 - but it won't match receiver rail height if you have the high profile receiver (see "click for installed view"). It may be the same height as the rail on the LP receiver, but you'll have to call MI to find out for sure.

ugaarguy thank you very much. I really like the troy mrf rail. Do you know anything about the difficulty of installing one of those? Removing the delta ring, gas block, etc.
