I decided to make a new thread for this so that we all stay focussed!!!:what:

I am seeking original (or a good replica) of the folding leaf rear sight mounted on the 3rd Model Dragoon.

I have struck out with both VTI and DGW who have none and neither do they have any suggestions.

How about you guys. I will need about five of them.

Thanks

Tony

Hello,

I'm interested to fit this useful accessory on my 3rd model Dragoon (Uberti).
Unfortunately, I was unable to find this part ready made.
So, I decided to build it myself and I'm looking for any picture, drawing to make something as close as possible to original.

I put in attachement some picture got on the Internet.

With the last one concerning Walker, found in this forum, it could be easy to deduct exact sizes and shapes, if any Walker owner indicate some real measurement on this picture.

Regards.

Hi Rebus,

I've seen thinner or less heavy versions of a similar rear Sight...an old one...on a Stock-provided Dragoon, but I don't recall where.

This sort of sight was popular on many 19th Century long Arms, and I think also on more recent Drilling Rifles.

Ideal...Winchester, Marples and others certainly would have made them...and possibly someone still does.

A three-position two-leaf Sight of this sort, would not be espeially hard to make for a small Machine Shop, or to make well, especially if one were going to make a few hundred of them or more.

Though like anything...to have done would be painfully costly, yet to do, merely straightforward steps and procedures...

Yeah Rebus,

Good stuff mate!

Now, please tell us where you got that image of a completed carbine from with the stock fitted????

I am vastly interested.

Thanks - will get back to you if I strike gold on my own hunt

Articap - Thanks mate. Pedesoli still make the Colt Root Revolving rifle so should be able to get that sight from them.

The LRE is not an authentic weapon of course but it would be nice to get as much 'original type parts' on it as possible and these folding sights were used on the stocked Draggies at least.

Well gosh DGW did list it in their 1986 catalog!

It was a little fixed L shaped sight If I remember correctly the legs offered 75 and 150 yard zeros.

The sight was drifted into a knotch so technically you cold adjust windage by drifting and elevation by filing down or building up the front sight.

I suppose that if a Dragoon could shoot into 3 inches at 25 yards it could shoot into 18 inches at 150 and Given that an 1860 .44 that uses a smaller load can penitrat a 1/2 inch plywood decking panel at 200 yards ( don't ask) I imagine a ball launched from a Dragoon would be apply powerful to be a lot more than a nussiance at 150.

Articap - Thanks Mate! Damn good links there.

I was particularly taken with one sight that (oddly enough) was named the Long Range Express. This has five leafs in a row and looks just the ticket for what is wanted - should go on the back of a Walker OK.

Aye
