I am thinking of purchasing either a snubbie .38 or a Taurus Mil Pro, and possibly getting an ankle holster for it. I wonder though, how effective are they in a confrontation. With an IWB, you can feign like you're getting your wallet out of your pocket. But I can't think of a believable reason for me to lean down and pull up my pant leg in a mugging.

ankle rigs are best for when you are seated at a desk or in your car. If it's your second gun and your on the ground already then you chould probably get to it o.k.

As a primary carry possition I think you could find a better way.

I carry a S&W 442 in an ankle holster - as a back-up gun- I would not reccomend this mode of carry for regular CCW - It works if you absolutely can not carry a gun around your waist etc - but otherwise I would avoid it - I use it as a backup to my full size duty gun - If something happens to that then I have a last ditch effort wrapped around my leg - If I have to pull that out im not gonna worry about how it looks or if its gonna seem odd - im probably already gonna be on the ground, shot, or out of ammo in the .40 - for regular CCW I use an IWB or a paddle holster - both will work great with your .38 - most .38 snubbies can be used as pocket guns although I would reccomend some sort of holster just for safties sake - anyway - long story short - I have worn an akle holster for a long t ime and only do it as a back-up - never for primary guns - just my 2cents

I thought about it....

and experimented with some different techniques.......pulling the holster side pant leg up while stepping forward with it and dropping to the non-holster side knee (kind of like dropping to tie your shoe) was the best I could come up with.

I carry a PT-111 pro IWB with a clip draw, after concluding that it's two large and heavy to carry on my ankle.

Others may disagree on that.

If I do go with ankle carry, it's going to be a J-frame revolver or a poly frame Kahr. But by then you're talking a piece that's small enough to pocket carry.

When I purchased my first (and only) carry piece, I told the manager at a local shop that I wasn't interested in pocket carry. He said, with confidence, that I would be before to long. Nine months later I know what he meant.

I retired after 31 yaers as a LEO. When I started ankle holsters were coming into widespread use. I have them, I use them but:

1. Not a good place to carry your main battery.
2. If you must carry your main battery in an ankle holster it's better to get the gun in your pocket, stuck in your belt, or some more accessible place if you think you're going into trobule you can't avoid.
3. If you're not saeted, on the ground already, in other words on your feet the ONLY way to draw from an ankle holster in to drop to your strong knee (your ankle holster should be on your support side ankle), pull up your pants leg on the way down, and draw. Much easier to do when everyone was wearing bell bottoms. I have seen all kinds of dancing routines with people trying to bring the gun up to them.
4. Keep in mind that it puts the leg you're carrying the holster on out of action if you get into a hand to hand situation with the exception of low kicks. I got jumped and knocked down with the BG on top of me once when I had an ankle holster on. I was going to be able to push him off me with my support side leg but didn't want to offer him my gun if he should grab my ankle. I got out of it another way but you need to take this into consideration

Only ruse I can think of, is to drop your valuable(s), and when you go down to pick up the wallet or jewelry you step back with right foot as you kneel on your right knee leaving your left foot out in front, and then draw from the inside of your left ankle. You want your valuables to be to the left of your left foot while doing this. BG should be watching your left hand picking up your stuff while you draw with your right, if you're a righty.

It will not be very fast but the BG hopefully will not be expecting you to have a gun. Fire from your knee before you try to stand and hope for the best. It will be even better if BG bends down with you. Push valuables at his gun hand to move his weapon away from you.

Don't see the practicality of it at all, to be honest... except in a car.

Bad guy walks up.

"Hey how's about you give me all your money?"

And points a gun @ you. What are you going to do/say to get to your ankle rig?

"Uhm, hold on buddy let me tie my shoes first."

I figure maybe for a last ditch weapon for a situation where you end up on the ground fighting the guy, an ankle holster could come in handy, but even then IMO that's a long shot. After all, if you end up on your back, you've already messed up.

I wouldn't do it, and I expect to be paid for my advice, so you're out $.02 :D

But seriously, if you're comfortable doing it then go ahead... At the very least it's one more option, and options are never a bad thing.

Can't think of any clever ways to go for it in a pinch. However, one of the few times I ever had to pull a gun in a real situation, was my backup from my ankle holster. There is no faster, sneakier way to get a gun in your hand while seated behind the wheel of a car. Ymmv of course, but they work for me for a backup. Oh, buy a GOOD one, if you decide to go this route. The cheaper ones just do not cut the mustard.
