The obsolete caliber thread in General Discussions got me thinking. A lot of calibers mentioned were not necessarily obsolete because of something better coming along, but rather because they weren't as popular as everyone hoped they would be.

My question is this: If you could have only 10 different calibers, what would they be? Availability is a moot point here; I've always wanted an AK chambered in a non-corrosive 7.62x45, the old Czech round. A bolt-action .408 CheyTac. A PPsh in .22 WMR. A No.4 Mk.1 in .30 Krag. A GyroJet multi-barreled cannon. :D A 1911 chambered in .45ACP necked down to .30. An LRN .308. A Spitzer FMJ 9x21mm +P+.

Any caliber. Any purpose. It doesn't have to even exist already. What would you like to have back, and what do you wish already existed?

  • .50 AE
  • .45 ACP
  • .45 Colt
  • 10 mm
  • .380
  • .22 LR
  • .30-30
  • .30-40
  • .308
  • 12-ga

And, because I can't make do with only 10:

  • .223
  • .303
  • .45-70

40-82 WCF
50-110 WCF Express
45-90 WCF
50-70 Govt
38-55
405 WCF
32-40 WCF

I guess there is a pattern forming here. :)

Ackshully, I'm of the "ten is plenty" camp...

.22LR (probably a Woodchuck with a Barracuda stock)
.22-250 (bolt gun)
5.45X39 (AK)
5.56X45 (AR)
6.5 Grendel (AR)
7.62X54R (Mosins, of course)
.30-06 (I want a Garand)
.45-70 Gov't (I also want a Guide Gun)
.50 Beowulf (AR)
.50 BMG (Barrett)

Add in shotguns and I'd have an NEF with all the barrels...

My little brother had a Winchester Mod 88 in .284 Winchester years ago. I let that one get away from me, and have regretted it ever since. That was the sweetest shooting little gun and the best performing little round you've ever seen. Do you really need the shorty 7mm STW with a 140 gr. at 3450 when the 284 Winchester will put them out at 3100 with much less felt recoil, and barrels that seem to last forever.
