OK, I am about to start the wonderful process of getting my CCW in Louisiana.

Now my quistion, what type of harnesses/dress are prefferable for concealed carry, to allow quick and easy access to the pistol while keeping it concealed normally.

I mean, jeans and a T-shirt just does not seem to reasonable, in the winter, ok, not a problem, I could easily hide a shotgun under my gortex or trench much less my small frame pistol, but during the summer, jeans and a t-shirt, maybe a button up shirt over it.

I wear a tuckable in the waistband holster and only wear jeans and a tee shirt or polo shirt during the summer, and winter because I don't like sweaters much so I'll just wear a coat over it if outside. I have an XD-9 sub-compact, which hides quite well being in a IWB holster. The tuckable part makes it so I can hide it even if I have to tuck my shirt in for an occassion. No one has ever pointed out to me that I am carrying. Even if I bring up the discussion about politics and concealed carry at work and the person working next to me says it should be outlawed and if they ever found out someone is carrying they'd turn them into the cops, they never notice that I'm carrying even if I'm just wearing jeans and a polo shirt. Carrying something big like a shotgun may be more of a problem for me.

I've had no problem hiding a compact under a t-shirt in an IWB holster. If you prefer to tuck your shirt in, they make "tuckable" holsters. You could always pick up a pair of Thunderwear or get a P3AT or the like with a pocket holster.

ok guys, thanks much for the help. With the tuckable holsters, yall have jeans that are just a bit big I take it so that it fits?

I choose to just deal with my pants being a little tighter over buying new jeans. I dislike shopping for clothes more than mild discomfort. Buying one size bigger will be enough to take care of it, unless you're trying to pack something with a half inch diameter chamber.

haha the gun I got for concealed carry is a .45. :p course it is a small frame, gun is just a bit bigger than my hand

The death of suits has come back to get us.

Amen, brother. The easiest thing to wear is a suit. I could double my normal EDC and nobody would know.

Anyway, the most critical thing is a gunbelt. I now use and highly recommend the Intructor Belt made by Wilderness Products. I've got the 5-stitch model and wear it every day but Sunday, when I wear a leather gunbelt (because it fits the loops in my suit pants better). I'd save a nickel on a lot of other things before I'd skimp on a gunbelt.

A well designed and well executed holster keeps the handgun close to your body and pulls the grip frame (butt) into you for a slimmer profile. IWB or OWB is a personal choice, I use both on occassion. I find OWB slightly more comfortable, but IWB a bit more concealable, meaning I can give a little less thought to my covering garment. If you choose IWB as your primary method, remember "Two Will Do". Two extra inches in the waistband of your pants will comfortably fit a holstered handgun. Buy quality. If you pick up something from the bargain bin, you'll soon realize you wasted your money. Good holsters start at about $80 for off the shelf stuff like Galco and can go into the stratosphere for custom stuff if you've got money to burn. The "average" custom holster, though, isn't much more than the aforementioned Galco stuff. If you can wait, order from a reputable custom maker. If not, Galco, El Paso Saddlery, Bianchi and a few others are decent quality and available on store shelves.

Clothing will depend on your build, your handgun and your holster. I wear either polo shirts untucked and one size large or button down shirts with straight hems that are meant to be worn untucked. Untucked flannel if it's cool and I knocking arounf town on errands, etc. With my IWB holster, I can get away with a loose T-shirt untucked.

Your pistol should be a breeze it it will lay in your hand, I carry a 5" 1911 and my wife can't usually tell.

Well, now, 1911 guy has pretty much covered it, but I have to add that for summer carry, I favor shirts of the type now marketed as "camp shirts" -- like Hawaiian shirts, but in solid colors or conservative patterns -- loose fitting, worn out, long enough to easily cover a full-size semiauto if worn in a high-rise pancake.

One point worth making, in my opinion -- dress like a grown-up. Baggy t-shirts and baggy pants might be okay even worn into your twenties, but when a man gets into his thirties, it's best to dress conservatively and attempt to blend. Nothing wrong with throwing on a sportcoat occasionally either, even with jeans, for a night out, plenty of casual jackets out there that won't make you look too overdressed.

I live in Colrado so I can pretty much always get away W/ flannel. In the summer I tend toward a t & a Hawian over it or a polo (1 size too big) & IWB. the most amazing thing I've noticed is that most people don't. most of the people you run into will be so tied up in their world that they won't even notice.

That said :

The first time I carried at church I had a conversation W/ the Pastor & he STARED right at my (concealed / maybe not as well as I thought) gun the whole time we were talking.
The same day a friend walked behind me in the sound booth & put his hand on my back right OVER the gun.

Maybe I wasn't quite as concealed as I thought

i carry an XD40 Sub Compact IWB in a CTAC holster. i have no problem concealing it under a T-shirt
jeans, khakis, shorts, anything i can wear a belt with makes it easy. even shorts with a draw string arent too difficult to carry with.

most of my friends carry as well so we will usually let each other know if our concealed gun isnt very concealed

Camp shirts and gunbelts.

Old Dog, those "camp shirts" are the straight hemmed shirts I was refering to. I didn't know they had a specific name. Learn something every day.

Taurusowner, I've always driven Chevy's, I don't see how a Lamborghini could be any better.

I didn't see what the hype about gun belts was until I got one. It's a "WOW" type of feeling the first time you use one.
I'd get a tuckable IWB holster even if you don't plan on tucking your shirt in just so you'll have that option.

Has anybody tried to wear a shoulder holster over an undershirt with one of the aforementioned camp shirts with one false button so you could reach inside. I've been thinking for a bit that this might work okay but haven't studied it enough to really know. I was wondering what ya'lls thoughts on this kind of thing were...

Agreed
i almost never tuck my shirt in. but it has been nice to have the option the few times ive had to

Kinda long - but you asked...

I carry a Kel-Tec P-3AT with ArmaLaser and two spare mags. loaded with a mix of expanding and non-expanding ammo carried in a SmartCarry holster 24/7. I am 6'-0", 235 lbs.

I don’t even think about it most of the time. It’s no more strange or uncomfortable than the change in my pocket.

I got this combination for a few reasons. Two of the main ones are;
First, I wanted something I could carry comfortably and completely concealed 24/7.
Second, my wife is uncomfortable around guns and I didn’t want her uncomfortable around me. Even she hasn’t “made me” yet and I have been carrying this way since January 2006.

Update - In November of 2007 my wife asked me where I was keeping the gun (just in case she needed it). I said, “As long you’re with me and I’m not using it, you can have it anytime, as soon as you go to the range with me and show me you can shoot and handle it safely”! - this hasn’t happened yet. Then I told her and showed her where I’d been carrying it for over a year and a half. I was concerned, wondering what her reaction would be. She was surprised, but made no negative comments. She asked if I carried it when visiting friends, shopping, etc. I told her I ALWAYS carry it where it is legal. She hasn’t questioned me about it since.

The SmartCarry size I have is the “XSL” security model as shown in the large photo on this web page:
http://www.smartcarry.com/lasers.htm

If I ever reorder I will get the “XSL” standard holster with the smaller pocket on the left as shown in the photo above the one that shows my holster.

Even though I think one spare mag is enough, I carry two spare mags because there is plenty of room for them in the holster I have with the larger spare pocket. I find that this holster is a bit too wide so I tuck the extra holster material under the mags when I’m wearing it (which is 24/7/365). This makes it just the right size.

I wear the holster low, with the strap around my upper hips, just below the waist, and the pockets centered between my thighs.

If you want to wear skin-tight jeans the SmartCarry is not for you. I wear loose Docker type pants, with a loose waist and suspenders with untucked shirts. This allows a reasonably fast three-step draw (more on this later). Because I buy pants with a waist one size larger than I would for belt use, the crotch is also a bit roomier which eliminates the problem some folks have with the SmartCarry riding up and pushing into the abdomen when sitting due to the tighter crotch. The larger waist and extra room in the crotch also allows for faster, smoother draw.

There is no problem sitting with crossed legs.

As to the draw…

Lift the hem of the shirt high up on your chest with your strong hand. As the shirt moves up suck in your gut and hook your waistband with your weak hand thumb and pull the waistband forward leaving plenty of room to reach in and draw with your strong hand. This takes some practice, but it’s faster than it sounds. I can consistently draw and have my first round on target in 1.5 seconds or less. You can even do it easily sitting down, not as fast, but you’d be surprised. It even works in a car with the seat belt on as long as your untucked shirt is over and not under the seat belt. In the car you draw exactly the same way, the only difference is that the seat belt moves forward a bit with your waistband. If you prefer a tucked shirt, just skip the "lift up the shirt" step.

I am a huge Jimmy Buffett fan. I have aways worn the oversized Hawaiian shirts and shorts. People that know me think it is because of Buffett and those that I meet I tell them that it is because I'm a Parrothead. Works wonders and have never had any problems dressing that way. Use a Summer Comfort IWB and so far nobody has figured out I'm carrying yet. I have actually come home and when I undid my holster my wife has said "I didn't realize you had that with you".:)

I promised myself I would never dress the "Jimmy Buffet" look, but since I started CCing, that's pretty much my casual attire. Except, I refuse to wear the goofy looking hat.

That "look" is a flowery too-large shirt guys wear when they get fat. It's normally a Hawaiian pattern you wear outside your pants. The pattern breaks up any image there might be of the gun.

If I'm dressing sporty/business casual, I wear a sport coat with shoulder holster. That's a hassle in warm weather cause I don't like sport coats. If it's business attire in hot weather, I probably carry in a briefcase. That, too, is a hassle, cause I'd be expected to leave the briefcase, wherever, when with clients.

Does anyone have suggestions on a good, sturdy belt that would work with business casual or business formal dress? The wilderness instructor belts are nice, but don't quite match the rest of my attire.
