Just wondering if it would be technically unrealistic (or just plain dumb) to desire a laser-based practice system where the following would happen: When the beam would strike a given receptor cell on a transparent target panel, it would cause that cell to release a spring-loaded "punch" that would knock a small hole through bullseye paper mounted immediately behind the transparent target panel.

I like the "paper-punch feedback" one gets at the range, and this seems like a way to dynamically simulate that experience in a quiet, unleaded way.

What do y'all think? Does something like this already exist?

Not quite making holes but - there is a device you can get which puts IIRC a laser insert in gun's chamber (seen it in use on a Glock) - and a special target deal that has some electronics - and a hit is registered.

I forget the details but it was a good (if costly) bit of gear. Someone may well be able to name it and describe better than I.

seen laser targeting systems to help sight firearms in (want one badly). some are laser devices sized as the actual bullet, some are barrel inserts. I've read good things but non that I have ever seen are capable of replicating recoil and real life conditions. plan on getting some so I can make sure my sights are all aligned

We used somethign simliar one weekend at drill with my reserve unit. It didnt punch any holes in paper though. the way it worked was we had basicly a laser bore sight on the front end of the rifle. We would pull the charging handle back enough to set the trigger and when the trigger was pulled the unit on the front would shoot a laser at this receiver target. The target was hooked up to a laptop that would tell you were you hit and what aspects of shooting to work on ie trigger squeeze, breathing, etc. They also had a the equivlent of a paper qual target were it woudl have a light under the shiloette light up to tell you to shoot at that target, pretty cool highspeed stuff.

I started using a laser sight to smooth out my trigger pull. One can really see the need to pull straight back!

I keep a CZ-75 with a Bullite Laser Training System installed by my nesting spot. The Bullite consists of a Laser Bullet that inserts in the chamber and when the hammer drops it projects a laser beam right where the bullet would have gone. The system comes with 5 reflective targets about 3 inches in diameter. When the laser beam hits the reflective target you get a flash rather than just a dot. I pick it up frequently and practice with it and I believe it has improved my accuracy and sight control immensly.

I just learned about the Bullite system recently and am very impressed with what I've seen of it. Very clever, elegant design. I hear the developers will soon be releasing a multi-round "kit" for use with revolvers. I might go for it for my SW wheelie if it's not too, too pricey.

But still, for me, as arcade-game-ish as it may sound, the fun/satisfaction of target shooting at the range is in the "feedback physicality" of bullets through paper. I think it would be a hoot-and-a-half to be able to fire a laser round and get the same kind of target impact.
