Is there a list of firearms that are safe to dry fire, or any rule of thumb to determine which types of actions or firing pin types, etc, are generally ok to dry fire?
If it's rimfire, it's probably not safe to dry fire. Reason being that the firing pin will land on the edge of the chamber and, over time, will peen the chamber.
The vast, VAST majority of modern centerfire handguns are safe to dry fire. The worst that will happen is you'll occasionally need to replace the firing pin spring (every 10k+).
