If dry firing a .22 is abusive, how may times can I expect to click empty with my Ciener .22 conversion kit before I do damage? It doesn't lock open, and I can't ALWAYS track the number of rounds I've fired.
I cannot comment on your specific application, but the occasional dry-fire that results from clearing a gun, or "overshooting" it (firing beyond the magazine/cylinder capacity) won't cause any damage. Damage that does occur generally results from the pin impacting the edge of the breech or chamber, where the rim of the case would normally be, so the longevity would depend on how tough the parts are made.
While most rimfire gun makers advise owners to refrain from dry-firing, Ruger bucks the trend and says there is no issue in their firearms. Still, I don't snap away with my Rugers the way I might with my centerfire pieces (and I generally use snap-caps in them.)
