Dublin Castle Flintlock Musket

[Old Flintlock]

looking for information on my Dublin Castle Flintlock Musket. Original Flintlock with Dublin Castle & Crown stamped on Lock Plate. It looks very much like a French Charleville 1763-1777 Military Musket. Has "S" shaped iron side plate & # 9 stamped @ breech. Thanks, Old Flintlock

If it looks like a French musket, meaning it has barrel bands, then the lock was made at Dublin Castle, and the rest was made elsewhere. Dublin Castle pretty much made King's Muskets (Brown bess). It is possible though that it is a trade musket made for Africa or India. Photos?

A lot of muskets were made of available parts in the old days. SOunds like an interesting piece. Post a picture!

My Dublin Castle Flint Musket was made long before Trade Guns were mfg. It has got to date from 1760-1780 period. Trade guns were of different design...24-28 gauge, short light, large trigger guard bow for two finger pull, bow/arrows/fox/tombstone stampings...most with brass dragon sideplate. Can't find any docunentation of Dublin Castle manfacturing firearms. Perhaps made under contract by French or Belgium makers?. Not by Britts...they were @ War for a hundred years. The 6" Lock is shorter than those used by French/Belgium makers. Thanks for your input. Old Flintlock

Many Long Land Pattern Brown Bess (1st Model) muskets were produced at Dublin Castle between the 1720's and 1760's. The lock is most certainly English. Sounds like you have a French musket refitted with an English lock - not too uncommon in the Colonies. The only way we can help more specifically is to see detailed pictures of the musket, showing all proofs and marks.
