Does anyone have any experience with the Duracoat shake and spray kit?

I am looking at refinishing a savage 93R17 that has some surface rust on the barrel, no pitting, but it looks bad, and the bluing looks worn reguardless. It shoots well, just not very pretty.

I'm assuming I need to completely remove any rust before hand, using birchwood casey rust and bluing remover or naval jelly, something like that.

Other than that, and following the directions, does anyone have any tips or hints to make it go smoother? I'm thinking of just a simple matte black on the barrel, reciever, and outside of the bolt.

I bought a "kit" that had a disposable aerosol sprayer, it was a Dura-Coat

It's a decent product and looked very good for my first attempt.

Make sure to spray it on as thin as you can, my instructions said you could use laquer thinner to thin. The product is very thick and can cause clearance problems if you get it into critical areas and let it dry.

I duracoated a Glock 22 frame with the OD green and it came out "PERFECT"! I finished it 8 months ago..and shot maybe 1000 rounds through it..and the finish is still flawless. Very easy to use..however...the finish is all dependant on the preparation of the firearm as is any finish.

Remember to shake the living snot out of the color. That is imperative. As previous poster said, use light coats and build up to the final finish. That way, there will be no drips or wierd marks in the finish. It's the best $40 you'll ever spend! Oh! Make sure you look at all the colors and select a tactical color. The finish on those is low gloss or flat. I made the mistake of getting a regular OD green and it was a little too glossy...so I had to scuff it a little and use another light coat to dull it up some. The amount of hardener that you use can also effect the shine. I know this from personal trial and error.

I just finished a rifle and small handgun with the advanced tiger stripe kit. Went pretty well and am happy with the end product. The preval sprayer that comes with the kit leaves a lot to be desired. Next time, I'm using an airbrush.
