Duxseal For Homemade Pellet Gun Target Trap

Does anyone know where you can get Duxseal? Are they still making it? For those of you who aren't familiar with Duxseal, it's a grey kind of putty used for a lot of things like sealing up holes in walls you run conduit through. But, you can also use it as a poor man's ballistic medium. I remember way back in the 80's a friend of mine had a big block we used to haul out into the boonies to see how various rounds expanded. The cool thing about Duxseal is it doesn't dry out, allows you to recover bullets so you can see if they expanded or not, and it's not messy like wet newspapers.

I just bought a new Gamo Big Cat 1200 Air Rifle, so I thought this would make a good medium to fire pellets into. But, I checked the local hardware store, Orchard's Supply, Lowe's, Amazon.com, and none of them had it. I called up Home Depot. They claimed to have it over the phone, but when I actually got there, no one could find it. They had a computer listing for some sort of duct seal, but they couldn't even find that.

I purchased some. I googled duct seal and found some on amazon. It is still out there.

I would think any local HVAC shop could sell you some, or at least order a block of it for you.

Home Depot here in town does sell it. It comes in 10 pk boxes of 1 pound sticks and is in the heating & air conditioning aisle with the furnace duct stuff.

For actual target practice, I would suggest you just get a real pellet trap.

Duckseal will rather quickly fill up with pellets in the same spot behind the X-ring and pellets will be impacting pellets and breaking up.
Then you have lead dust to contend with when constantly cleaning pellets out of the putty right behind the target.

Duct seal works great and is silent when the pellets impact. I have a trap I made years ago with probably 2000 pellets stuck in it. I have never cleaned the pellets out or anything, but if you felt the need to, it would be easy to do or just buy more. I shoot rifles with up to 40 FPE and the 3" of duct seal sucks them up nicely.

My local Menards,Lowes and Home Depot all carry Gardner Bender Duct Seal #DS-110(1lbs).

Thanks for the replies. You guys were right. The problem is, in the old day's you asked for Duxseal. Now it's called Gardner Bender Duct Seal (disturbingly close to Gender Bender). Different manufacturer. That's why I was having a hard time finding it.

So far, the new stuff seems to work fine. 1" seems to be enough to stop an 800 fps lead pellet at point blank range.

BTW. I already do have a commercial pellet trap. the problem is, it's only rated for 800 fps pellets max. Since the Big Cat can reach velocities of 1,000 fps, I don't want to chance destroying it.

A 1 lb. chunk costs $2.00. The problem is, my local Home Depots never have more than 5 lbs. in stock.
