Anyone have a serial number list for the Whitney's? I traded in to a .36 #27751. That should make it a war time but I don't have any Whitney source material. Slight damage to the bottom front of the grip panels, other than that it's a nice old piece.

Thanks pohill, I may order that book, I just completed his survey. Picked up several old ones in this last trade. A pristine S&W Model 2 Army, type 5. Came with a unopened box of period ammo, .32 RF. Also a 51 Navy that's original except the wedge may be a replacement, 1863-4 production. A unfired Centennial #8114. The original box may be available, they are looking for it. Large estate sale...mine well be next.

I just looked at a S&W Model 2 Army today at a local gunshop (it just came in today). It also came with a box of ammo but the store owners weren't sure if it was the correct ammo. Is there a .32RF short and .32RF long?
Is the Whitney shootable?

For the Model 2 Army I have .32RF Short but I think it well take .32RF Long, not 100% positive on that. The Smith is a 90% or better revolver.

The Whitney is 75%+, mechanically tight, great bore, pitted chambers, the original nipples are serviceable. About 80% finish remains, a few marks on the left side of the barrel. The chips on both grip panels are the main detraction.

The Colt has no original finish remaining, minor pitting around the barrel lug, good bore, good chambers, good nipples. Has a period replacement wedge, locks up tight, nice trigger, excellent wood. Think I'll shoot it next week.
