Yep, Shows all my transactions. But, if the LE types want any purchases that I have made at Sportsman Guide they just subpoena my transactions. Everyone in my small town knows I am a gun nut, I have nothing to hide.

I think many of us here know that.

Maybe you are far more trusting of the local Joe 6-pack Consumers in your
town than some of us are of ours.

Can you give me your last name and zip code so I can move to your kind,
trusting, and peaceful land?

Someone should email them to slap password protection on that page.

I called customer serivice, and told the lady about the post, if I was a business owner I would like to have known about this. I said I put in the last name "smith" and my zip code and shure enugh mr smith orderd a Jacket last month and only lives one street down from me. don't be suprised if the page is down soon

The response email finally came. Canned responses are a great way to lose my business forever. They could have taken the time to actually address my concerns and at least act like they were interested in keeping my business.

Here's what I sent back:

If this is all that you are willing to say, then you've lost my business for good. I came to your customer service department with legitimate concerns about the security of my personal information on your website, and you did not even address my concerns. I am sorely disappointed and with great regret I will not be purchasing anything through your company from this point forward. I expected a certain level of respect for your customers that I did not get, and this canned response is unacceptable. I will be sure to share this negative experience with anyone I can, so that others will not have to experience this poor of customer service themselves.

Thank you.

When you tell a company ''I will never shop here again!'' what they hear is: ''You don't have to listen to me anymore!''
Well even if voting with my dollars doesn't mean anything to them, it should. We are in a recession after all.

Lack of order security

It was very easy for me to find orders that one individual had made and also made a comment on this subject. I sent him a PM to verify my findings. No reply yet.

I just got this email reply:
Dear (deleted by expvideo),
I apologize this happened. We have been receiving several complaints regarding this from our customers. We are in the process of attempting to get the web site changed so that our customer's information isn't available to the public.

Sounds like maybe enough people have been threatening to take their business elsewhere that maybe they will give me the time of day afterall. Interesting. You're only one customer until your one of several.

As I said in my response to you, you did not find me. It is going to take a bit more searching on your part to find me. It can be done, but you haven't succeeded, yet.

I agree that this is not a good situation. I have emailed about this, also.

Well their system still sucks and if everyone sends an e-mail to them they just might change it. If not, We should no longer buy from them.

Have a Happy New Year

So after entering "smith" and "85208", sadly, I can tell you where a 9mm lives. Outside of the privacy issues, the fact that somebody looking for a "piece" now has a specific address to target really worries me (not my name or address btw - just punched in a zip code for a state that has minimal restrictions for hand guns).

Ok, the supreme management of SG (probably just Gary Olen) should have
had time for a monday morning emergency staffing about how they're going
to lose an additional $100,000 for 2009 just from the shooters on THR. By
early this afternoon word should have reached the html "programmer" who
would have been able to remove the tab from the page and re-post within
about 20 minutes.

As of this posting it hasn't been done. Confirms they don't really give a rip.

I just received catalogs from SG, Centerfire, Natchez, Cabelas, etc. in the
mail.

It's going to feel very cold at SG in MN this year without all that extra money
to burn which will be going to their competitors.

Interesting.

I randomly typed in a few more common last names in my zip code and found lots of things.

Guy not 5 blocks from me ordered 5 Tommy gun magazines and a safe dehumidifier.
According to the tracking number it arrived 12/5. That's good to know huh?

No more business with SG....... ever.

Because of this type circumstance and several other scenarios I no longer have anything gun related shipped to my home address. ALL shipments go to my work address, let them try to break into a business, not my house where things are (hopefully) safe. I totally agree with a boycott until this policy is changed.

This appears to be a big to do over pretty much nothing. So you can enter a last name and zip code and find out what was shipped and when it was delivered. I don't see what the big deal is.

What it doesn't show is:

Full name or even first name or middle name or initials

Shipping Address

Credit Card info

DOB

SSN

Purchase price

Phone number

Wow I can enter the last name Johnson and a zip code and find out that somebody ordered gortex in my zip code. There are at least 50,000 people in my zip code and it does not have a real big population.

Okay so someone with the last name of Rodriguez received an order of 100 9mm ball ammunition rounds in the greater Los Angeles area on Jan 4th, 2009. Now if you can make some useful information out of that you really should be working for the NSA or CIA

Can someone please explain how this information could be exploited by anyone other than the purchaser. Guys are already linking this to other websites getting the usual people into hysterics.

You might want to try it out first before stating your case. It DOES display the person's first and last name (and middle initial if there's any), mailing address, item purchased, and even the UPS tracking number. That's reason enough for me to cease immediately any type of business with that company

Great tool for thieves...

Let's see who just got a brand new gun I can go steal... WOW, this site is great, it even comes with the Address and UPS tells me it was delivered two days ago!! Mount up boys, lets go steal some guns!

If I order Glock magazines or Tommy gun magazines chances are I have a Glock or a Tommy Gun. Now that you know my name and address it is simply a matter of waiting until I am not home and you can conduct some mid-morning shopping with your crowbar.

I just moved so am not too worried about it now but I have spent some serious money there in the past on magazines and ammo as well as other items. But there are lots of places to buy on the internet with similar prices that don't post your purchases on the internet so I will shop there instead.

You are joking right?

In 2 minutes I learned that a guy 4 or 5 blocks from me has ordered Tommy Gun magazines and a safe dehumidifier.

That tells me he would likely be an exceptional target for a break in.

He has a safe, and probably several guns. I have his full name, his address, and his phone number.

And he doesn't know it.

Can someone please explain how this information could be exploited by anyone other than the purchaser. Guys are already linking this to other websites getting the usual people into hysterics.

Except you are completely wrong about the info it shows. Heck of a first post.

Here's the response I received today:

Hello Allen,
Thank you for your email.
I apologize for the frustration caused by our online order status. We had made a change to our order status page due to numerous complaints that the older function was too difficult to operate. Since that time we have received a high volume of feedback, compliments and complaints, regarding the ease of visibility. The order status page is set up to locate by last name and zip code but if there is more than one in that area it will prompt for the matching billing address as well. We would like to think that our customers would not be randomly picking various names and zip codes to view other customers orders, but we can understand apprehension caused by the ability to do so.

At this time we do not have plans to change the status lookup, however all complaints we receive regarding this are being passed on to the corporate level for consideration as we have come into a high volume as of late. Please be assured that while we are unable to change it at this time, it is something that customer service is following through on. All order information automatically expires 90 days after any order activity.
If you have any questions, please contact us.
