i got the call while i was in class. a few guys i know, my boss his 2 daughters and a few more friends not sure how many but atleast 2 more, where out hunting this morning and treed a bear. they decided to let my bosses daughters take the kill so they were on their way up the trail and gary stayed to keep the bear in the tree.

when they got back Rebecca took the first shot with a 20 ga slug, shot connected in the shoulder but the bear stayed in the tree. so Rachel took a shot and the bear dropped but was still alive, so the bear charged gary and was shot atleast 4 more times since he emptied his rifle into the bear and my boss emptied his into the bear right about the time it got to Gary.

from what ive been told the bear pawed Gary and broke his arm, then it chopped down on his hand putting both incisors through his had. my Boss walked up real calm and shot the bear in the back of the head. the bear let go and ran off and was then killed by a load of 12 ga 00 to the head

Gary is in the hospital now and is going into surgery at 5 to set both bones in his arm

so far i dont know the true size ive heard a little better than 4 and that it was closer to 500 im gonna call Rachel in a few minutes to get a first hand account of what happened so far all of my knowledge is from my brother in law who got the first call from my boss.

I am sorry your friend was injured. I hope your friend makes a full recovery. I honestly do .

Do people really consider shooting bears from trees hunting / sporting ?

What do people that do this expect will happen when a wounded and pissed off bear drops down from a tree among a hunting party ? It to raise it's front legs in surrender ?

Glad your friends are OK, relatively speaking.

I bet that is one hunting experience they will never forget!

do you consider hunting coons with dogs sporting geo?

to each his own many of these guys grew up hunting bears with dogs and now they enjoy running the dogs just as much as they do getting the bear

I consider hunting coons with dogs very sporting. I don't consider shooting them out of trees to be however. It's just my personal stance on things.

And people still want to carry a pistol for "bear protection".

Read the original message:

the bear let go and ran off and was then killed by a load of 12 ga 00 to the head

If a Buckshot did it, a 44 Magnum would have done too...

If you shoot and miss (understandable in a simular situation) there is not sufficient caliber in this world to stop a bear

I know what the original message said, what's your point? By my count, from the original message, it took two 20g. slugs, four "rifle" rounds of unknown caliber, one "undetermined" round to the back of the head, and finally a round of 12g. 00 buckshot to stop this bear. That's EIGHT hits. Still wanna carry a handgun for bears? Be my guest.

<edit> I see now the OP is saying there were NINE hits.

the rifle rounds were all .44 magnum

and the 12 gauge was a 3 inch 00

EDIT ok i just got off the horn with rachel and her dad over speaker phone, the guys that were there were gary and Mullet (steve dont ask how he got the nickname mullet), Gary didnt get into surgery until 6 and as of 15 minutes ago hes still in.

the first shots were from Rachel and Rebecca, they fired at the same time Rebecca with a 20 ga slug and Rachel with a 12ga slug both to the head. the bear dropped and gary walked up when it was trying to get up and shot it with a .44 to the head , then the bear got onto all fours and he shot it again, then the bear started walking towards him and from rifle length he shot it in the neck. then he tripped and the bear got on top of him and my boss shot it once in the back of the head with his .44 mag and the bear released and turned towards him so he shot it 2 more times before his gun jammed and Rachel tossed him her 12ga he shot it one more time, then the bear tried to run and was finished by mullet with a blast of 12ga 00buck. there were ten hits that connected with the bear and atleast 8 of them were in the head. the skull was wrecked and full of lead.

official weight from the bear biologist was 575

I begin to wonder what king of bullets they were using...maybe Hollow Points?? seems strange to me...

A hardcast 44 Mag, for exampke a Garret Hammerhead, at that close distance, fired from a revolver can almost go all the way lengthwise on a brown bear

575 Pounds is not even that big....the only explanation that I can have is extremely poor shot placement....I cannot believe any bear can take lightly a 44 Magnum point blank in the head.

This prove that no matter the caliber, on a charge only CNS hits count..period...

jacketed softpoint is what all the boys use

its possible they were using hollow points but i dont know why unless thats all they could find since pistol ammo is still a pain to find there

Even a cheap ordinary 240 gr 44 Mag soft point, especially out of a rifle barrel, will make a smoothie of a bear brain through the skull if the shot placement is right

ned they all like the ruger .44mag carbines

only reporting what ive been told man, it may end up in the paper tomorrow but im not sure since they didnt call 911 they just drove gary to the hospital

I hope your friend gets better but I'd change the thread title. If you are trying to kill something and it fights back I wouldn't call it an "attack", just the will to live.

Posts: 754 interesting story! It does sound more like Bear Self Defense though instead of Bear Attack.

That's what I thought myself, if you shoot a bear you owe it to yourself and the bear to put a good kill shot on it the first shot which means shooting it in the head as a general rule.
If I were a bear and had someone shoot me in a none killing way I would be mad as H*ll and fight for all it's worth so this should be a good leason for all involved.
I hope your freind get's better and hope he has more hunt's that turn out in a better way.

To the OP and others. Sorry to hear of the fellows injuries and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

This doesn't sound like an attack but a wounded animal struggling to live after being poorly shot. Demonstrates the need for picking the correct shot with an adequate weapon...
