I am posting this for a fellow forum member "GURU1911" He has approx 50 years of firearms experience and 30 years of gunsmithing experience. This method has helped me out on more than one occasion withing the last week.

This will be a tutorial on ultrasonic parts cleaning, It will do a much more thorough job than just about anything available and it is a very cheap process.

The main ingredients to complete this process:

A source of vibration:
I used a plam sander, The GURU uses a Homedics neck massager with variable speeds, the model is PA-1

A Tub or Container:
You can use a dishpan, Paint can, 5 Gal bucket, foldgers coffee can, old Tupperware containers, (i use a sandwich container but i havnt cleaned anything big... yet) It is recommended that you have a container with a lid so the solution will not go everywhere when cleaning.

Cleaning Solution;
myself I used simple green, I am not sure on his mix but I use 1 part simple green 10 part water You can also use Mean Green and Orange blast. Again you only need to use as much solution as you need depending on the size part you are working on. You can strain and reuse the solution up to 3 times. You do not need to use too much of a strong solution, also you may want to rig up a wire to hold the part up allowing dirt to fall free.

The Process:
All you need to do is select your part that needs cleaning, drop it in your container, and pour in your cleaning solution. Turn on your soruce of vibration whether it is a sander (with out the sandpaper of course) or a neck massager or whatever you could think up. And press the vibration against your container check it every minute or two and see how its doing. This process will clean extremely well so remember to re-lubricate everything very well.

So guys thats all there is to it. This is a cost effective way to clean just about anything, I have so far cleaned my bore brushes and mops, Cleaned sand out of the pivots on my Leatherman Tool, and will be using it soon to clean my bolt the next time it is disassembled. So give this a try and let us know how it worked for you.

*again this is GURU's method I am just posting it for him.

How about strapping the container to the back seat of a Harley?:D
I may actually try this. Good thing I have an orbital sander already, I'd hate to have to go to the drug store to purchase a "source of vibration". I can already hear myself at the cash register; YUP I really am making a sonic parts washer with this here source of vibration!;)

I too use Simple Green, it is the nectar of the gods!

Thanks matt for the posting !!!

Thanks for taking the time to write this tutorial, regarding my el-cheapo, but darn effective "ultra-sonic" cleaning method. It might not be fancy, but is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying one from of the gunsmithing supply vendors, as they cost nearly $1000.00.

Liquid cleaners: Simple green, mean green, or orange blast. These are all excellent for use in your "ultrasonic cleaner":
1. Non-toxic
2. Non-flammable
3. No noxious fumes
4. Low sudsing
5. Biodegradable
6. Gentle on the hands
7. Filter & reuse up to 3 times

besides the ultrasonic, keep a squirt bottle mixed about 20/80 & keep on your benchtop. Great for a quick hand wash, cleaning a few small parts with an old toothbrush. If you got a dirty bore, i dip my bore brush in a little bit of full strength solution, brush bore, clean with patch, blow out with compressed air, & apply a little break-free for protection.

No problem GURU, thanks for the tips, and thanks for the soution info a great add on, i will edit it in...

Hey GURU not only does it not smell bad, some of that stuff smells pretty darn good. As for my hands, good ole "twenty mule teem" Boraxo is the best stuff on Earth, leaves em smelling pretty good too.

Anyhow, I got out my 3/8 HP dual motion half sheet sander and I am contimplating methods of attachment to my chosen container. I am also wondering how long it will take my cats to come out of hiding after I fire this baby up.

I love the idea of the DIY ultrasonic cleaner. Many of us would be able to "make" one for $0. I wish this thread had been started a few months ago.

I just wanted to throw out there that Harbor Freight sells one for $25. I try to avoid HF, but I've got one of these and it works great. It's smallish, and the 2 minute cyle time can be annoying, but it works for me.

Kenneth:

Before you "crank er up" turn on your video camera & catch your cat's reaction when they hear the racket !!! I just thought up a new joke---" if your home-made ultrasonic cleaner has a kick starter, you are either a biker or a gun-nut"

btw: Auto & m/c parts also clean well in your new cleaner--i promise.

If any of you rig up something that really rocks, take some pics & share with the rest of us.

Let er rip kenny---ah-eeeee

Guru, HAHAHA haha hahahaha. I'm going to use my 1/4 sheet palm sander.

The wife's not going to believe this one.

Mr. Sow

When you walk back into the house from using your new "vibratory ultrasonic cleaner" in your workshop, be sure to wipe that smile off your face before the wife sees you !!!! Just remember to tell her, that you were cleaning your firearms !!!!!!!!!

The only thing worse than being observed using a "vibratory ultrasonic cleaner" by the wife would be letting the wife use a "vibratory ultrasonic cleaner". Makes me tired just thinkin about competing with it.

KEN:

That may be true, but look at it this way, at least your guns get cleaned & your wife is a happy camper---ah-eeeee !!

Just for clarity, this is a "vibratory" cleaner. It isn't even close to ultrasonic. That doesn't mean it won't do a good job, and probably for shorter dollars, but it won't clean the way an ultrasonic cleaner does.

Changes

Holding my sander against the side of my plastic dish tub isn't working. The plastic tub is absorbing most of the energy. I thought about attaching the front end of the sander to the side of the tub, that would tranfer the energy directly into the liquid, however I think the plastic tub would eventually crack and make an unholy mess.
On to plan B. I'm going make a sheet metal piece about the same width as the pad of my sander and about twice as long. Then I will put a 90 degree bend on it and attach it to the sander. All I'll have to do is dip the piece into the cleaning solution and vibrate my troubles away. My next big decision will be deciding weather to make some contraption to suspend my source vibration over the tub or just hold it and whistle Dixie for a few minuets.

I once asked a Texan why he carried a .45
He replied "Because they don't make a .46":p

JNewell is correct. "Ultrasonic" means just that, not a simple vibratory cleaner, which won't do much more than just sloshing the stuff around would do.

Maybe I'll try putting the tub in front of my stereo speakers and play the drum solo from In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida over and over again. :D

Hey Kenneth, sorry for the late response, But I think that you may not have a good enough contact with your vessel, try using one with a lid and pushing down, I think that the tub would absorb the vibrations because it is not rigid with out the lid.

Matt you are awesome!:D It works much better now. Although a 3/8 HP dual motion half sheet sander is biggish. BUT workable. I must have had a brain fart, or a little too much Canadian thinking juice (Molsen Export 12 oz bottles) because I seem to recall reading your post on the stenchy Pachmyr grips thread. Wasn't there something about putting a lid on? Anyway I'm going to try my idea also, to see how it works on larger containers.

As for the post's by our more scientificly minded:scrutiny: friends. Yes you are correct, however, when it comes to deciding whether to spend money on expensive gun cleaning stuff or guns, I vote for guns. I hope that in the future I will have to decide if it makes good business sense to purchase an ultrasonic cleaning tank.

I just had another idea..... or too much caffeine. How about a combination vibratory parts cleaner and foot bath?!? Put in parts, add Simple Green solution, light aromatherapy candle, put on nice music, stick feet in, turn on switch. AAAAAHH aren't guns wonderful?:)

COFFEE! You can sleep when you're dead.

Wasn't there something about putting a lid on?

I'm not sure, maybe you should try it again and find out? :D And also those who dont mind spending money on top of the line ultrasonic cleaners be my guest, but I will be sitting in my garage with a sander and Rubbermaid tub getting my gun pieces as clean as yours for allot less money....

Yes kenneth

YES, THE VIBRATING FOOT TUB MASSAGE WILL WORK. MAYBE NOT AS POWERFUL AS MATT'S SETUP OR MY ORIGINAL WITH THE HOMEDIC'S HAND HELD MUSCLE MASSAGER, BUT IT WILL WORK.

GENTLEMEN: YOU MAY SCOFF, DISSECT, POKE FUN AT, OR ATTEMPT TO VERB ALLY HUMILIATE ME ON THIS FORUM, BUT WHAT I WRITE IS THE TRUTH & IT DOES WORK. MATT WAS KIND ENOUGH TO PURSUE HIS OWN IDEAS FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS nD I HAVE ENCOURAGED HIM TO DO SO. YOU MAY SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED CASH IF YOU SO DESIRE ON A FANCY STAINLESS STEEL TANK MODEL WITH ALL THE BELLS & WHISTLES, BUT MATT, KENNETH, & MYSELF WILL CONTINUE TO USE OUR HOME-BREW "SONIC" CLEANERS AND SAVE A BOAT-LOAD OF CASH TO SPEND ON GUNS, KNIVES, ACCESSORIES & RELOADING COMPONENTS.

PEOPLE LAUGHED & MADE FUN OF NOAH FOR 120 YEARS, BUT THE RAIN EVENTUALLY CAME !!!!

This idea could break out any time now. I've already been asked how it works on brass, and to be perfectly honest, even though I already soak my brass in Simple Green, it hadn't occurred to me to try.(I guess thats why I'm where I am, and you're where you are)
Anyway Simple Green seems to work pretty well. It gets out the heavy powder residue, it loosens up the gunk in the primer pockets so it comes out easyer and cleaner if you scrape it out before you rinse, and one brush stroke gets the inside of the necks clean to bare metal. My dry tumbling media lasts alot longer too, because I don't goober it up cleaning the crud out of my brass.
Let us know what you think. I'll try it next time I dirty up some cases.
GURU, keep the faith. Even though few visionarys are recognized in the their own lifetimes, you may yet prove to be the exception. Just keep posting on THR!

Wow Kenneth I didn't even think of that!!! ATTENTION RELOADERS BRASS WASHER HERE!!! bet excellent idea...May I recommend some window scree rigged so the dirt will fall below in to the tub instead of back in the brass.....

"atta-boy" kenneth & matt !!!!!

Fellows: You see what happens when innovative thinkers are willing to "think outside the box", try their ideas, & bam if they work, are willing to share the results with other shooters they have never met ???? Thanks for having the courage to put yourselves on the front lines & willing to take a hit if it comes !!!

Kenneth: Thanks for your words of encouragement to the "guru"

matt: Keep that 15 year old young mind thinking the question "i wonder how this / that would work---no matter how wacky your idea is---if it works safely & achieves the desired results you wish to attain, then who really gives a hoot about what others think of you.

My jewish gun-toting neighbor down my street said this: "true genius is seldom recognized, rewarded, or appreciated by the majority of people"---seth passovoy.

Yeaa I think some o these simple tricks are pretty great being able to be like, I now how to fix that and stuff

Just so yall know, a belt sander will NOT work. Guess im gonna have to buy that massager after all, embarrassing as it may be.

Sorry no video.
