Economics of Reloading

I think the biggest cost with reloading is that once you get rolling on one caliber, you quickly find yourself fondling guns of other calibers, because, well, you built up a collection of brass for those calibers scrounging at the range, and now it wouldn't really cost that much to start loading for it....

Yeah, Gary I just bought a 40 cal pistol b/c I have a gallon freezer bag stuffed so full of 40 s&w brass that I cant close it . So the only logical thing to do was buy a .40 cal gun and a set of carbide dies for it .

I started reloading because I wanted cheaper ammo so I could shoot more, and because I simply wanted to learn the dynamics or reloading. I started off 2 years ago really cheap...an old Lyman turrent press, Lee auto-prime, Lee 9mm dies, scrounged brass, some CCI primers, lead bullets, and a pound of Bullseye. That stuff paid for itself very quickly, but I soon got the itch to expand production and calibers. I now use a Lee Load-Master progressive in addition to the old Lyman, and I now load for 9mm, .38spl, .357mag, .223, .308, .243, .45ACP, .45auto-rim, 30-06, 270win, 30-30, and .380acp. I certainly haven't paid for my equipment yet, but I figured I am only 24 years old and with a lifetime of reloading I will pay for it ten-fold.

I just finished loading 100rnds of 30-06. I'd compare it to Federal Premium, but mine groups at half or less than the Federal, they don't sell a 180gr load with the same bullet, and mine stops deer quicker. Last time I priced the Federal, it was ~$2/rnd, and mine are less than $0.50/rnd. You can get the cost back pretty quick if you load the right calibers.
