I'm thinking about getting the Ed Brown Kobra Carry. Please talk me out of it, giving FACTS. Thanks. I already have the Dan Wesson CBOB and was wondering what the Ed Brown would offer me that the CBOB wouldn't. I'm not interested in paying big bucks merely for "name brand".

Fact - I have owned 1911's made by Baer, Wilson, Colt, Kimber, & Springfield
Fact - I now own an Ed Brown and all the others are gone
Fact - I have 7300 rds through my Ed Brown without a malfunction
Fact - It's the best 1911 I've ever owned.

I go to the range (indoor) every week and just about every week somebody wanders down to where I'm shooting and asks me "What's that you're shooting?" I just tell them its a 1911 and ask them if they'd like to shoot it. So far everyone has taken advantage of my offer and so far everyone has said something like "WOW, that's the best shooting gun I've ever shot." The last guy who I let try it was shooting his Christmas present - a Wilson CQB - and he said "I wish I would've gotten one of those instead of this Wilson."

I kid you not.

Thank you much

Thank you very much, Clarence. I DO appreciate the factual input - I kid you not.

Any MIM parts in the Kobra? Thanks again.

Ran three mags through a friendly stranger's Ed Brown special forces at the range a few years ago...and I still remember the encounter.

Hopefully someday I'll have the $$ to buy one. Only downside that I can see is $2200 + tax disappearing from your bank account.

If you keep your eyes open you can find them in like new condition for much less than that. I passed on a like new Kobra Carry last month for $1600. Most people don't shoot their guns very much.

I bought mine used but it looked like it had never been shot. It almost embarrasses me to admit how much I paid for my Ed Brown............I traded a gun that I had about $500 in and gave $750 cash. It came with 5 magazines, all the paperwork and an Ed Brown pistol bag. No regrets.

Another point of view

I am a proud owner of four Browns. A Class A Limited Commander, two SF's and a Kobra Carry.

Which gun do I shoot better & enjoy more?
Which gun has the best trigger?
Which gun is within arms reach 24/7?
Which gun do I carry (when I carry a 1911)?

My Dan Wesson CBOB.

Just sayin

Shipwreck, that's a nice looking pistol. How's she shoot?

Best 45 ACP 1911 I've ever shot. Right now, I'm getting into 9mm 1911s, as I have a Springfield Custom Shop 9mm 1911 too, and just ordered another. I really wish Ed Brown would make them in other calibers like Nighthawk and Wilson does - if they did, I might only own Ed Browns.

only bad thing i consistently hear about ed brown is their custome service sux.

as this is a big selling point for me, it might be a deal breaker for me. not sure yet, as i really like those kobra karry's :)

1911

Wait and see what the 2010 Dan Wesson's look like. Sounds like they're upgrading. ie forged frame, tool steel innards, better finish.......yup more cashola too.

up to you, but i love my Kobra Carry

Shipwreck,
Hell will have to pretty much freeze over before EB has anything but .45ACP.
If they did, i'm right there with you.

I'll try to talk you out of it but only because you said so.

What can an Ed Brown Cobra Carry can do that your Dan Wesson CBOB can't do? They are same profile, they almost look the same, they will fit on the same holster, their mechanism is almost the same.

Will you feel you'll be able to defend your life better with the new Ed brown that you still don't have or will you feel more safer with your tried and true Dan Wesson CBOB after a CT brian, Ted Yost or John Harrison do a reliability job on your DAN Wesson CBOB?

Do you really believe the MIM parts on your Dan Wesson CBOB will fail during a fight that you always wish not to happen?

I defend my life with my Kimber pro carry 2 (with reliability job) and it never fails with weekly training in IDPA. Do you believe my kimber is better than your Dan Wesson CBOB? My kimber have more MIM parts than your Wesson. If you do i will exchange my gun to you and i will even pay for the shipping.

I shoot with someone in IDPA that shoots his Ed Brown Kobra carry. And what i always hear from him is how he loves the shootability of his friends Kimber SIS compared to his Ed Brown. Go figure!

We always want what we do not have and do not appreciate and make full use of what we have. 1911 desease is really hard to cure. But the 1st step in curing it is to accept that you have the desease.

I so wanted the Ed Brown also but what i have is a Kimber. I did a bobtail job on it and it now looks like and carry like an Ed Brown Kobra Carry. I even used the ed brown bobbed mainspring housing. So i don't desire an Ed Brown Kobra Carry anymore and just use my tried and true kimber in my IWB holster wherever i go.

At the end of the day if you have the money to spend and getting an Ed Brown Kobra Carry will make you really happy then get the Ed Brown and unload your Dan Wesson CBOB but maybe polishing your Dan Wesson CBOB and shoot it a lot and train a lot with it is better for you. Then when you brake your Dan Wesson CBOB which may not happen for being overused then you can get the same profile but a bit better Ed Brown Kobra Carry.

And then it will be very sensible to get the Ed brown because you have trained and been very experience with your Dan Wesson that you don't need any re-training and will have very familiar feel with and ed Brown Kobra carry.

But for now you are just wasting money. Get a Gun Site training instead, Get a reloading machine for your 45 ACP and shoot a lot of matches IDPA, USPSA, BULLSEYE. Your Dan Wesson CBOB is an excellent gun and is better most of of all the pistols. There are more ****ty handguns than your Dan Wesson. Your Dan Wesson CBOB is also a hard to find weapon and command a premium.

Just promise yourself that next time you buy a weapon you will be disciplined and get the weapon that you really like in a pricepoint that you are comfortable.

After re-reading your original post, I thought I would add this just for your consideration:

IF the Dan Wesson company thought people would pay $2200 for their CBOB's they would be charging that price. Obviously they don't think people will pay that much and they are correct.

On the other hand people WILL pay $2200 for an Ed Brown. Why is that? I think it is reasonable to assume that people believe they are getting more value when they purchase an Ed Brown.

I think it is reasonable to ask - What am I getting for the difference in price?

I admit that I have never owned a Dan Wesson 1911 and have nothing ill to say about them, but I believe that you will be getting a 1911 that is manufactured to higher quality standards when you buy an Ed Brown.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity I went to the 1911forum and did a search on the Dan Wesson forum for the word "problem" in the title and got 74 hits. I then did the same search on the Ed Brown forum and got 9 hits.

FWIW

recently a few people were posting up that their new C-Bob had the slide locking up on them, to where they could not get the slide to budge.

the C-Bob's are built on a a cast frame vs. forged Ed Brown.
the new V-Bob has a forged frame and MSRP is $2040 vs $2445 for the Ed Brown.

and for some more reading:

again, it's your choice...

EXCELLENT points!

EXCELLENT points, Clarence and smoothdraw. I really do appreciate them. But these excellent points make it more difficult for me to decide. Two questions: (i) How many MIM parts does the Dan Wesson CBOB have? (ii) How was it ascertained that the Ed Brown customer service "sux"?

Names and numbers

Might it be that there are more (74 compared with 9) "problem" hits for the Dan Wessons CBOB compared with the Ed Brown Kobra Carry because far fewer people own the Ed Browns?

Regarding the question of why people would pay more for the Ed Brown than they would pay for the Dan Wesson, might this also not be a merely because of NAME?

I do appreciate inputs. Thanks.

Dan Wesson CBOB at $1200 is a sweet quality gun. ED brown Kobra Carry at $2200 is $1000 more or 90% more. Is Ed brown Kobra Carry is really 90% better than the Dan Wesson CBOB? You can buy a Dillon 650 with $1000 and you will be happier person.
