EDC Flashlights: What do you carry?

I carry a Streamlight Stinger on my dutybelt and a full size Streamlight in my car. Both are rechargeable and a charger for each is in my work car.

Maglite AAA solitaire on my keychain
Maglite 2AA LED in my car glove compartment
petzl tikka headlamp in my emergency kit in the car trunk

EDC

Ray-o-Vac AAA light in jacket pocket (with the Case CV Sod Buster Jr).

Streamlight 52101 1xAA Task light (LED) in trouser thigh/side pocket daily.

Two brightness levels: one click = high (8 lumens), two clicks = low (2 lumens). Run time: 5 hours high, 80 hours low. (I change the battery typically every eight months to a year. Under heavier use, I had to replace the battery in something like four months.)

The "low" setting is just fine if you're crawling around under equipment and into cabinets of electronics. It will also light up a pitch black room.

The "high" setting will hurt your eyes indoors. Works fine for outdoors, looking for toys in the back yard, scoping for random animals around the house, stuff like that.

I actually bought a spare when I got mine, and the spare is still in the blister pack. If I see another one on the rack, I'll pick up another spare.

On the nightstand is a River Rock 2xC LED light with a focused beam. I should have bought more of those when Target was still selling them cheap.

Surefire E1B Backup, find it incredibly convenient and perfect for my needs. Expensive but I don't begrudge a cent as any of the cheaper lights I tried to avoid laying out the $'s for the Surefire were all inferior.

I have recently updated my carry light
old light was a mini maglite led that had what I thought was good output
new light 4sevens Quark 123(2) tactical and WOW for $70 this thing is great
I wont even look at the surefires because of the price and it took a friend to show me the 4sevens before I thought the $70 was worth it
as soon as I get a chance I want to replace o few of my other household flashlights with 4sevens products

oh and I just checked the webpage they are on sale for $55.20 so nows a good time

I recently retired a Microstream 1AAA, beat up but still going strong. The new Maratac with M-L-H and max output of 80 lumens on a single AAA got my attention.

Better yet, the Maratac head is supposed to screw down on the Streamlight clicky body. That's next - the Micro - Tac.

Just got in my new Nightfighter X (previously had only the older Nightfighters beside the bed gun) and the switching system is now just like the PT-2L (my everyday carry). The old Nightfighter was one light output only, twist for constant on. The new unit has high, strobe, low, and clicks in for constant on in the mode you choose.

Couldn't resist-I had to go back and get a Streamlight Super Tac X-I kept one of my old Nightfighters by the window to spotlight critters in the back yard-I'm curious to see how much more light the Super Tac X puts out-same output in lumens, but 'bout four times more candela. Looks like the same size body and it uses two CR123's just like the PT-2L and Nightfighters, but the head is about three times the size.
This should be my new backyard critter light (still waiting on delivery).

BTW-I see more of the Streamlight line has the C4 LEDs now-I ordered another Stylus Pro to see how it compares with my old pre-C4 LED unit. I think the output of the new ones is now double the old units (48 vs. 24 lumens).
Heck-it wasn't but $16.96 delivered. :banghead:

basicblur,

The Streamlight Super Tac will blow your mind! I have the earlier version (single output - 135 lumens), and it throws farther than any other light I own. It may look a little awkward, but the dinner bell head shoots a laser beam of light for hundreds of yards. If I had the skills, I would take it apart and replace the LED with a Cree XR-E or XP-G, pushed at the limits to an output of more like 250-350 lumens on 6 volts. But even at a "measly" 135 lumens, it is a serious light. Your updated 200-lumen model should definitely impress.

The other good thing about the Super Tac is it has a spring on the back of the LED driver, as well as in the tailcap, so it's recoil-resistant. The single-output model would make a fantastic long-rang spotting light mounted on a rifle. The newer model has more than 1 output, so it's not an ideal tactical light, unfortunately. I wish they had just upped it to 200-lumens without adding another output level.

I'm curious to see just how bright it is-my PT-2L is more powerful than my old Nightfighters, but the Nightfighters put out more light I assume because of the bigger reflector-as big as the Super Tac X reflector looks, I'm expecting some really PO'ed night critters! (I once had a deer charge the house when I spotlighted him).

BTW-for my intermittent use I went with CR123 units-I was leery of the rechargeables, but my brother uses the rechargeable Strions and says they hold a charge for a looooooong time-he says he can't remember the last time he charged 'em and they still work fine.

Rechargeables can be hit or miss-good batteries for 'em can be made, as I have an old Uniden Bearcat scanner that has the best rechargeables I've ever seen. I left the darn thing laying around for a few years without using/charging it, and darn if it didn't appear to have a full charge when I went back to using it-the batteries also seem to last a long time and still charge well. I figured as long as it had been sitting on the shelf I'd have to replace the batteries, but long term storage/lack of use doesn't seem to have bothered its batteries a bit.

Check out Streamlight. I carry a "Micro Stream" every day. It's about the size of my pinky, has a momentary on tailcap switch, takes a single"AAA", and it's under $20.00. It's more than bright enough for an EDC light. I own a couple of "tactical" lights that take the lithium batteries, but I find myself looking more and more at the new lights from Streamlight, that take regular alkaline batteries.

For nightly walks on an open space trail, I usually carry a Surefire Z3 with an XP-G LED drop-in by Nailbender. I use two 18500 rechargeable lithium ion batteries. When I want a smaller light, I usually carry a Surefire Z2 with an R3 LED that has a lens instead of a reflector, for a tighter spot. I have an assortment of Fenix and Olight LED's which all seem to work well for backup and special uses. You can never have too many lights or batteries.

I'm curious to see just how bright it is

It wasn't brightness I was referring to when I said the Super Tac would blow your mind - it's the throw. On a moonless night, far away from city/suburb light pollution, it will easily light up tree tops at 200 yards (from my unscientific testing in an empty field using Google Earth distance measuring). It still has useful spill, but it keeps an extremely tight hotspot out to very impressive distances.

It's size and shape take it out of the EDC rotation for me, and I bought the light as a long-range spotter, so it gets pretty limited use in the suburbs.

In the Fall and Winter, when I'm wearing a heavy coat, a Surefire 6P is at the limits of size for EDC for me. In the Spring and Summer, my 1xAA and 1xCR123 lights get carried in a pants/shorts pocket.

My perfect EDC setup is the Surefire E1b (for instant 110-lumen throw, plus a very useful low), and my Fenix E05 on the key ring as backup, and as a very nice flood light.

Surefire 6P, been carrying it for about 4 years now. I've managed to smash the lense(6 story fall onto concrete) and wore out the rubber cover on the rear activation button. Surefire sent me a new front bezel piece(bezel?) and a new tailcap , no questions asked and its still running strong.

I've also managed to lose a G2 nitrolon that i really liked. I'll probably buy another one to keep in the molle vest i'm putting together.

Another Surefire 6P user here.

I have the LED version, which doesn't eat batteries like the Xenon bulb version did.

At work I'm forced to carry an old style 2 "D" cell maglight with the old incadesant bulbs. HATE IT.
For everyday carry I have either a 2 "AA" minimag or one of the little 3"AAA" led lights Harbor Freight was giving away recently.
Nothing fancy.
