Effective Muzzle Brake in .308?

I have an Ishapore Enfield in 7.62 NATO. The barrel is shortened to 20" (I bought it that way) and I'd like to add a brake to reduce the recoil.

Who's design is real effective? What's been your experience with a similar (bolt) rifle?

I bought a brake similar to the "jungle carbine," which has a cone for the flash plus an opening on top supposedly for recoil reduction. Any idea if it would be effective? I won't install it unless others' experiences suggest it is worthwhile.

Any experience or links to good articles/comparisons appreciated. I will take my Enfield to a 'smith and have it threaded.

It may not work the same for your gun, you'll have to try it yourself. With a short barrel like that that brake is going to make it really loud.

If that "thing" is like the one on my jungle carbine, it isn't a muzzle brake. It's a flash hider. No recoil reduction what so ever.

I agree, from what you describe it is a compensator (to tame muzzle climb only) and a flash hider.

FWIW I have heard that the JP brakes work really well.

Regardless, a brake will make the noise / blast far worse then any slight recoil reduction you might get.

If the recoil is that bad, get yourself a PAST or LimbSaver shoulder pad.

Shooting my PTR91 chambered in 308, I didn't notice a reduction in recoil so much as that the muzzle didn't deflect from the target as much. I have a Cooley compensator from JPrifles dot com.

I have been very happy with a Smith Enterprise brake on my 18" Garand. Definitely a noticeable reduction in climb and recoil. Does make it noisy, though.

I ended up shooting next to a guy this past weekend who had a muzzle brake on his x39 rifle. Geez....the 1st round out of it....I thought I had left my hearing protection laying on the bench (but I didn't). I walked away and let him finish his shooting, then came back to the line and proceeded with mine. I can see no rational reason to have that installed on such a small .30 caliber rifle....unless you plan on shooting in your own back 40.

I have one of the JP "Tactical Compensators" (I hate that name) on my 16" FAL. Before the brake, 100 rounds was my limit for a day and I'd still have a little soreness. With the brake it shoots considerably softer than an AK, and I've put as many as 225 through it in one range session without any soreness. I'd say its the softest shooting .308 I've ever felt, but its been too long since I've shot Ian's Garand to make an honest assessment.

The noise and blast are almost crippling for everyone around you, but you don't notice it much shooting it. I try to keep a couple lanes between me and the next person on the range. The ports on the top of the brake will obscure your sight picture when you shoot, if that's important to you. Might not be an issue on a bolt gun.

Unlike some suggestions here, this muzzle brake has made my 1903A3, 30/06 feel no worse than my .243win. Very effective at reducing recoil. It may not sound very nice to those around me though. This rifle was quite brutal on the bench previously.
It needs to be professionally installed but still very affordable. I will pm purchase info if asked.
