Ejecting/Re-using Shells

I have some Win. PDX1 and Rem. 0 Buck that have been loaded, ejected, (I shoot one round of Trap with my Ithaca 37 HD shotgun every year, just for giggles) loaded, ejected, etc. for the last 4 years with no ill effects, I have no hesitation at all putting them back in, nor worries about them firing.

If I had a round for every round of ammunition I've picked up and re-loaded into a gun or magazine I'd be stirring rather pretty right now to re-box and sell them.

.22 to 40mm.... Unless there was specifically something wrong - back in they went.

Then too, I have to wonder: If a fella is concerned about re-inserting them, what does he do with them? Deconstruct them?

Todd.

Most of them at my gun club leave them lay on the ground; them I or one of several other reloaders grab them and deconstruct them.

.22 LR I (try to, some are duds) fire.

I rarely shoot my Mossberg HD gun but I do practice shucking then shells and reloading. That same ammo has been loaded and unloaded for about 15 years about 2X/year; no issues feeding

If you unload and clear a pistol's chamber every day and reinsert the same round into the chamber repeatedly it might be an issue down the road at some point. I think this is more likely with flat nose bullets used more commonly in 40 S&W and 10mm than other chamberings. If I did so on a regular basis I'd inspect the round for setback. But I can't see this ever being an issue with a shotgun or rifle.

I have a box of loose buckshot loads, from 00 to F law enforcement ammo I bought many years ago from a Sheriffs department auction when they still sold that sort of thing. These have been loaded and unloaded countless times. Some have visible wear on the case heads and body from this process and bouncing along bumpy county roads and logging trails in service with said Sheriff's department. The writing on most is illegible. Some are early plastic Win Mark 5 and early Remington with the translucent plastic likely from the 60's through relatively modern Win Ranger LE marked 00. I shot all the paper ones at targets as some showed signs of moisture damage, and I did have a few soft reports with those. I use them for coyotes and such out behind the barn, and have yet to have one fail to fire or feed reliably. I would trust my life with the more modern ones where I can still read the printing to know exactly what's loaded...in fact...I do. 5 are loaded in my cabin gun for bears and such as I type.

There is very little to worry about with set-back or ejector markings on shotgun shells or brass cartridges, not to say it doesn't happen. The only common exception are cartridges from a Garand get dinged up pretty bad at times. Most cartridges and shells that may be bad come from people doing crazy things with them to begin with. I've found 30.06 cases resized to .270, for example, or cases that were not properly resized forced into a chamber and shown by scrape markings on the base next to the spent primer. Shotshells are usually just plain worn out by splits in the gussets, missing edges off the crimp or scorch marks where the brass meets the plastic or paper.

my clay games friends and i have fired tens of thousands of reloaded shotgun shells over the years with no problems or damage to our shotguns, i load rem sts-gold nitros cases up to 7-8 times(i use a shell reconditioner) and then shoot them in my sporting clays auto loader and leave the cases.

I have to say I really don't understand the reasoning behind not firing an ejected round. I have never had an issue with an ejected round and would never waste a perfectly good round of ammo.

Shotgun shells, especially unfired ones aren’t like spent rifle rounds. I shoot reloads, so all have been ejected, loaded, fired, loaded, etc
