I just picked up a new rem 870 express w/extended magazine tube in 20 gauge.
I tried cycling dummy rounds through it and it would extract the shells , but not eject it out of the port. I looked at the ejector and there was no spring like the one on old my 12 gauge 870 wing master. does the new 20 gauge 870 come with an ejector spring?

I bought two 1187 20 gauge shotguns. They had a run of bad extractor spring ports in some 870 and 1187 bolts. Two trips to the factory repair center and both are repaired at no cost to ship, repair, and receive. They'll fix it, just send them a note and they'll send you a packing list and send UPS to pick it up.

the 20ga does not have an ejector spring. There is no need for it as there is no space to make up as in the 12ga. The ejector spring on the 12ga only springs in so the breech bolt can pass it. It then springs out and the rim of the spent shell hits the raised portion of it and that starts the shell moving out of the receiver. It is nothing more then a spacer. This is necessary because of the size of the receiver. In the 20ga you don't need this to start the ejection process.

If you rack the shotgun back with authority it will eject. They are made to rack this way. Also, you are less likely to have a feed or ejection problem when you rack it with authority so do this every time. I even do it when testing to feed and function with dummy rounds. It is automatic with me so I know in a fight I will be doing it.

Also, dummy rounds are actual shells with a full load of lead to the same weight as a live load. They simply don't have a primer or powder. If you are using some kind of plastic snap caps they may not eject and are useless to test the feed and function of an 870

Chasu, I think you confused the ejector with the extractor.

Thanks guys I'm new to shotgun, actual got into them by accident, my wife's uncle gave me his police 870. I shot skeet and got hooked. I'm not sure if it was because I'm in my 50's now.
