870 Ejection Spring question

I have an 870 20 gauge that does not have an ejection spring, but my other 870 does have it. I checked with my cousin, and his 870 20 gauge has the ejector spring. However, his 28 gauge 870 does not have an ejector spring. Does anyone know what models and when they did not put in the ejector springs and why they changed? Any additional information on this would be appreciated.

I've no idea of the dates but when I bought my police trade-in 12 gauge, it had no ejector either. It worked fine. It is an '81 I think.
