I am the lucky owner of a US rifle of 1917, aka, 1917 Enfield in caliber 30 of 1906. Made by Remington's Eddystone arsenal in 1917.
I salvaged it from a rusty Bubba'd wreck. It could never have been returned to original, so I spent a year with hand tools only to make it a great sporting rifle. No plastic, no CNC, just blued steel and hand finished Walnut.
I did not expect a lot in the way of accuracy from it. Original GI barrel on it that had seen use with corrosive ammo.
Last week I proceeded to do ladder loads to find whatever the old warhorse liked.
Fed brass, TTL & flash hole reamed, Sierra 168 Match King bullets, IMR 4895 powder, Win primers, loaded out to maximum magazine length.
10 different loads, 5 rds each from starting to max in 0.5 grain increments. All fired from prone with bags front & rear & a 14x scope.
Only one of the loads grouped larger than 1" @100 yds. The best 4 were:
.78 x .52"; .39 x .75"; .48 x .51"; & finally, 4 rounds through the same hole 0.12 x 0.12 & one round bringing the group to 0.53x 0.28.
The rifle has been epoxy & pillar bedded, with a Dayton Traister trigger.
I am both surprised (pleasantly) and highly pleased that an almost 100 year old ex battle rifle can and does shoot with great accuracy.

I started one forty years ago. US 1917. Got divorced, sold it. Later found out I married the daughter of the guy sold it to. Her brother gave it to me a couple years ago. It had been in his basement for thirty years.

Finished it and it too is a great shooter. Not as good as yours but 5/8" groups are common. I did get a 2 1/16" group at 300 yards.

Here's a photo of the muzzle end of the barrel with the ordinance bomb and the High Standard stamping & a proof mark "P".

Carbine85, to call a man a liar if he posts his accomplishments without a photo
is impolite at the least. You have a photo.

All others, the groups were fired at Markham Park Florida on Saturday the 28th of this month in front of about 75 witnesses, including the range officers, many of which are masters or high masters.

Velocette, that is awesome. I dont think he intended it in a rude manner, but more as an encouragment to see that pretty rifle you fixed up. I would love to see the rest of it myself.

I for one believe you;)
Old gold, that is a sweet old rifle you have and quite a story to go with it. Thanks for sharing.

very partial to them old ones myself, couple of 1930's Spanish mausers,
and a WWII 98k mauser to name a few, they don't shoot as good as yours, but I like em. congrats on yours!!:D

Chill out, we do that to every one, it`s all in fun..................We love to see beautiful firearms !.............

That's great shooting. I'd be dang happy as well.

The "pics or it didn't happen" is a common response when folks don't post pics. It isn't meant in a disparaging way, it's just a gentle hint to show us some pics of your prize possesion. We all like pics. :)

Very nice! They are a great rifle. I bought mine through CMP a few years ago and initially thought I'd wasted my money. The bore was terrible and couldn't hold a group using the 150 grain CMP ammo. After some trial and error I discovered that it loved 165 grain bullets.

Fella's;

Is it still possible to get original wood for a 1917 Enfield? My neighbor has one that somebody cut the stock off from the barrel band forward, probably his grandfather.
