I normally only shoot Milsurp 7.62X51 out of my rebarreled to .308 Garand and I don't expect MOA accuracy out of it. But I do expect to be able to do better than minute of paper plate and that's all I could get with South African.

I'd bought some South African because it seemed that most folks thought it was OK ammo. Turned out it definitely was NOT! But I wanted to prove it to myself so I ran a test.

I used my CZ-550 American with NIKON Prostaff 3-9X scope at 100 yards for the test.

I had 20 rounds of Portugese left from the last batch I bought and about 100 of the SA. I'd noticed that SA shot all over the place and 1 round in 20 wouldn't chamber without using some force to close the bolt (after the 3rd one of those when it happened I just chucked the rotten suckers). The SA shot all over the place - the best I could do from a sitting shooting position without a rest was about 10". With the Portugese I could do about 6". Was it me or the ammo?

Turns out it is the ammo.

I broke out the ole Caldwell rest and went to town. Set up two targets at 100 yards. Just to be fair I shot the SA first so the Portugese was shot out of a hot barrel (which supposedly makes a bolt action less accurate). Firing rate ran about 1 shot every 20 to 30 seconds.

See results in the pics of the targets. The SA shot high and into a group that ran 2"X4" (the outers smallbore 100 yard target). I shot two 4 round groups and one 3 round group Portugese (100 yard rifle precision sighting in target). You can see the difference. The bottom right bull was a 3 shot group and 2 of the holes are so close together as to be almost 1.

Like I said SA sucks - I don't recommend it for anyone. I especially don't recommend it because either the bullets are loaded long or some of the brass is oversized because like I said before 1 in 20 chambers only with difficulty.

What was the year of manufacture? I have late 1970's SA that shoots fairly well out of my Ishapore jungle carbine. I have heard some lots of some years were less than desirable though.

Are you referring to your particular DSA rifle not performing well using the SA or DSA the company not recommending SA for use in their rifles?

Port. out of my FAL and Cetme has been consistant and pretty good.

SA out of my FAL does require me to close off the gas setting. The SA is loaded a bit lighter, and is a bit more inconsistant accuracy wise. I use it for plinking myself.

Buy as much surplus 7.62 NATO as you can afford. It is steadily going away and it won't be coming back. I've found the SA to shoot adequately in my PTR-91. I just ordered a case of Lake City from ammoman for $279 delivered, my rifles love Lake City.

You should read this.

chickenfried, there was a post awhile back about DSA not suggesting using SA 762 in there rifles. They went as far as saying that it would void your warrenty if you shot SA surplus in them. cant find the thread though.........

Werewolf,
Just curious if you've ever tried any of the surp. x51, from Venezuela, or Indonesia .... if so, what kind of luck did you have with it?

INDIAN .308 SUCKS, inaccurate, full of duds, dirty as hell,

My cetme eats SA like its goin outa style

southern ammo in loris used to sell mixed USA/IMI/Belg/Port at $108/1K
not anymore:banghead: shoulda bought more.

Didn't know that there was Venezuelan. Just heard about Indonesian today from the place I buy my mil-surp from.

Not used either but would be interested in what others have to say about it.

I buy from Brigadoon's in OKC. He's got Wolf 7.62X39 by the case and no one else in OKC has even a 20 rd box of any brand that I can find. He's pretty knowledgeable about surplus ammo and he says there just isn't anymore Portugese or Australian to be had. Spanish is drying up. He's got cases of SA and is considering getting some Indonesian. He's carried Indian in the past but it's been a while and I don't believe he will again.

To parrot another poster milsurp 7.62X51 NATO is getting rare and the good stuff is almost gone.

normally , all your former Brit empire countries ammo is very good, to include SA. I use SA ammo made from the early 90's, and i usually zero with it. Skip the India stuff though, stick with amer, aussy, canada, also the ammo from the heavy german influenced south america countries is very good, such as Venezuela, argentina, etc.
I think it may also depend on your rifle, i have a post ww 2 Parker Hale 308 ultralite, with 24 in bbl, that is a one hole punch with both the Portuegese, and the S. africa.

Molon Labe and SnakeEater, ah yes, the joys of living close to AIM. I to am trying to buy as much SA .308 as I can. Nice not to have to pay shipping on those 980 round cases. I did pick up 1K of Port on links just to add a little variety to my stash though.

PS. thanks for the heads up on the Gunrunner, SnakeEater.

jagdpanzer347:

I was just down there a few weeks ago and picked up 5 cases of SA. To add to my, um, collection. Haven't shot any of it yet. Hope it's good stuff.

Nice not to have to pay shipping on those 980 round cases.
Right. But they nab you with sales tax. Not sure which is better... paying shipping and no sales tax, or sales tax but no shipping.

Molon Labe, yeah paying tax sucks, but it's a small price to pay for the ready access to AIM's goodies. The funny thing with me is, I'm buying all this 7.62 and don't even have the FAL or PTR91 I'm lusting after yet. But as they say, without ammo a rifle is just an expensive club! At least the FR8 won't go hungry!

I like Port and SA (outside of Hirtenberger and Lake City but they are scarce and/or too expensive) for my DSA StG-58 and M1A. I agree that the Port is better.

I have 2500 rounds of Port laid up, 2200 rounds of SA in the gun room. I pick up a battle pack of SA everytime I order something from AIM. I can't find Port anywhere anymore.

iamkris, the only Port I have seen lately is the linked variety. I got mine on sale at a local sporting goods store on sale for 39.95 a can. A fellow at the last gun show I went to had some for 45.00 a can. I think JG sales had some in the latest Shotgun News.

Before I had 1000 round through my SA58 South African would not properly eject. I had to do the FAL pogo stick to get the spent case out. After putting a thousand rounds of various 7.62 NATO rounds through it the South African seems to work just fine. I also have Portugese and could detect no difference in accuracy between the two and 200 yards.

Portuguese surplus in Michigan Dunhams is on a 200rd linked belt. Is this safe to shoot in rifles or is it Machine Gun only?
