All the stories, bolties shoot better than semi autos or levers or slidies.
Well at the top end they do. But for us ordinary folks dem gas operated semi auto modern sporting rifles do purty darn good. (and before the fan boys start throwing rocks, I own and shoot pretty darn well 6 bolt action rifles from .22 rf, .222 Rem through 30-06 & 7.62x54 Rooski, but not all at the same time.)
Back to the story. All shooting done at 100 yds, 5 rds minimum, shot with a bipod, a rear bag and my elderly mark 1 mod 1 shoulder.
Last month I bought a lightly used AR rifle in .223. 24" ss FF barrel, 1:8.
I read the books, read the blogs, studied the reloading manuals, listened to the folks that sounded like they knew what they was talkin about.
Cleaned it good then started out with 100 rds of Walmart 55 gr RP FMJ. ~~ 3" groups.
Tried some Dogtown 55 gr SPs over some H322. ~~ 3" groups.
Then tried some Sierra 69 gr HPBT match bullets over Re 15. (Yes I did listen to some of the folks on this site) HOOO AHHH!
I did the usual ladder of loads starting with the minimum and working up to the max in Sierra's book. 9 loads. None of them shot over 1". NONE.
Groups went from about .88" to .42" One 4 round group 'hole' was .31" with a "flyer" 1/4" away.
The brass was segregated by weight +/- .5gr. thats all. CCI primers.
That was last week. Went back to the range yesterday to make sure the above was not just a good day. Virtually duplicated the results. It was windy with changeable winds. Best group was .47", 5 rds with the same powder charge that got the best group earlier. Groups with powder charges + or - 0.2 gr were nearly the same size & could be wind dependent.
This from a stock, unmodified rifle.
I'm debating upon whether to put the rifle on the wall and never shoot it again or keep it up and take a chance on disappointing myself.
I hope the rest of this year is as good as the first few days for me and for you'all out there.
