Which companies make the best electronic hearing protection? Is their any good values out there that are reasonably priced (say in the $150 range) and yet do a good job and are well made?

I have the Peltor Tac 6, others here have the Tac 7. I really like the Tac 6, but I wear them with ear plugs. 50 dB total attenuation and you can still hear leaves crunching under your feet.

^I've heard good things about the Peltor. What is the approx price and is there any decent online places it can be ordered from if I decide to go with that brand?

I've heard two conflicting descriptions of how these things work. The first being that they actually provide active impulse noise reduction. The second being that they amplify ambient sounds but shut off upon impulse stimulus. Does anybody know the answer?

I tried Oleg's down in TN... if I had the cash to dish out, I would get electronic muffs right now. I could hear birds, wind... everything was crystal clear... when I shot, I could only hear the echo off the far hills... very cool.

I'm currently using Peltor Tac 7's. They've been trouble free. I bought mine from CDNN.

Have had the big Peltors for several years. When they do "blocK" it is everything, including conversation. I think it is maybe "Pro Ears" that are said reduce overall volume during close gunshots - without blocking out normal sounds. Others here can likely expand upon.

Got the bright idea of wearing them quail hunting one time, the theory being able to hear quail running better before they flushed. The crunching of leaves and twigs by my own footsteps was so magnified, it quickly drove me nuts and I had to remove.

Overall, I've been pleased with Peltors. Quite comfortable. Single nine volt battery lasts a long time (if ya remember to turn off!). I think the bigger ones are rated better for noise reduction. Seems like Cheaper Than Dirt offers them in catalog. Online too?

I have the Peltor Tac 7. They work great, and you can hear normal conversations just fine.

Shoot a PM over to cslinger if he doesn't catch this thread - he got a deal on a set of (don't know what brand) of electronic muffs for around $45 brand new. They're translucent yellow, too. Oooo!

I have Peltor 7s and Pro-Ears. The peltor's "clip" with loud sounds (shut off) whereas the pro-ears "compress" or reduce the noise by 20 or so db. So, if there is a lot of shooting going on (such as in an indoor range), it may be difficult to hear continuous conversations. The pro-ears make it a little easier. Last time I priced the Peltor 7s it was about $150 and the Pro-ears were about $200. I do double-plug when I'm at the range. BTW I use the pro-ears the most, except when I take newbies to the range, then I let them use my pro-ears and I'll use the peltors.

I imagine the big Peltors (Tac 7) would have better overall attenuation, but for me they'd only work for pistol shooting. For use with rifles or shotguns I believe the Tac 6 to be a good trade-off. My primary hearing protection is a set of form fit ear plugs. The Tac-6 muffs sound amplification allow me to hear what I would normally miss (due to the ear plugs) and still not destroy what's left of my hearing when I do shoot.

I have a pair of Tac 6's and Tac 7's. I like them both for my needs. I agree with the statement about lots of people on the line, you may still have a problem conversing with somebody else, but then it will be hard anyways to talk. I wear plugs also when shooting inside and just the muffs when outside. I use the Tac 6's with my shotgun for Trap/Skeet everyweek. Still on the same battery set after about 8 months. I dont turn on the sound everytime I'm at the range. I do enjoy the 'quietness' sometimes.

We bought them yesterday at ASP in Joelton for $69.99 each and they are worth every penny. They also had them at the gun show at the Fairgrounds today for the same price.

I'll ask Cslinger to post a picture. They take two AA batteries.

I love my Peltor Tac 6. Never going back to the old style muffs.

Peltors

I have a set of Peltor 6s and love them. I also use a set of the cheap foam ear plugs with them. The first time I put them on and walked downrange I could hear everything that I was stepping on. Totaly amazing! Buy a pair and you will fall in love.

Everything about electro 'muffs has pretty much been said by other posters- I've had a pair of Pro Ears Linear Elites for about four years and they rock.

The ability to hear ambient sound and range commands is VERY nice.

And yes, they do attenuate the noise, 20dB down sounds about right; it's like someis turning the volume down on a loud stereo very quickly and then turning it back up again a split second later.

One weird thing I noticed is when the weather is right and there's a lot of static electricity in the air, I can touch a door frame or some other ground and I'll get a distinct 'POP' in the 'muffs.

Small price to pay for normal hearing at the range.

Sven- I'll have mine at the shoot next Saturday; you can try them out.

tried several of the clippers. ended up with ProEars Linear Elites for self and woman. she also uses her's bowhunting turkey.

got them for 10% over wholesale. still 150 plus the tax some four years ago.. not that much more than the others and offers 29db reduction when turned off. each unit operates independently of the other. get stero reception. 4 N batteries total and they last for months.

if you like really quiet, get some flight line muffs from the military. remove them carefully or they will suck your eardrum out. my set came off an aircraft carrier forty years ago and still provide more blockage than all others i have tried. no electronics tho.

Peltor Tac 6
Looked around the web - don't carry them @ cheaper than dirt.
Anyone seen a good price for them online?
Gundogsonline.com / hearing protectors
Peltor Tac 6 $129.95

Peltor Tac 6 April Special 119.00
Is this about the average/best price you've seen these for? Sheslinger: You got these for 69.99 a pair I'd sure like to get that type of price - will they ship?

I use the Peltor Tac 6s (with over-the-head band) with earplugs. The Tac 6s only give like 19db due to slimline design (and I believe they say the dB reduction test doesnt measure the right spectrum for gunshots), so I wear 29dB plugs as well just in case.

Wow!:what: Leaves crunching under feet, bird flying above --would I be able to hear the same even though I'm moderate to severely deaf in both ears? A miracle...

Personally, I use the Silenco brand with form plugs for added protection. I can't imagine why I'd want to have a conversation with someone at the gun range anyhow. They can wait till I'm cleaning my firearms afterwards.

:)

Because I have to pass a hearing test every year to keep my job
I am very carefull about hearing protection. I have the Tac 7s because of the high NRR and I also wear the best foam plugs I can find. The 7s are big but I wear them to shoot everything from skeet and sporting clays to 50 BMG and have never had them get in the way. They work great and it is nice to be able to have a conversation without removing the muffs or the foam plugs I always wear with them. I have never used any other brand so I can't compare. I do know that they are well worth what they cost and you will be glad you spent the money.
