I am almost ready to start reloading for the first time. I have a Dillon 550B and I am in the process of making a bench. All I need now is a scale. Is the Dillon electronic scale worth the money, or should I save a few bucks and get a least expensive one? I figured with the free shipping it wouldn't cost that much more. What do you guys use for scales?

I have no experiance with the Dillon scale but they are known for quality equipment and I would suspect their scales are as good as anyones.
I personally prefer the beam type. This is with my owning a Pact digital plus a couple RCBS beam types. The digitals IMO are great for finding a unknown wgt but to simply check a charge that should be of a given wgt the beams are just as fast. One doesn`t need to know what the charge weights if wrong, just that it is right or wrong. Plus the beams are cheaper for equal quality.

I enjoy my RCBS 750. Accurate, repeatable, and fast...what else could a guy ask for.

The Dillon Beam scale, RCBS 505, Hornady scale (all the same scale basically) or an RCBS 1010. All good scales. Simple to use, dependable, no fickle electronics, perfect for checking a powder measure. If it's not an item you'll more than for checking a powder measure (Likely to be your situation.), then a beam scale will do a good job with no troubles. Be sure and get a check weight calibration kit. RCBS sells a good one.

I have a Redding and wished I'd bought the RCBS 1010. Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to try out most of the scales on the market, through nothing more than sheer being in the right place at the right time. My plan is to sell my Redding and get the RCBS 1010 due ot the really nice fine adjustment.

Dillon is a quallity supplier. I haven't got accustomed to these new-fangled digital products yet. My old RCBS 5-0-5 still works as well as anything that I have tried.

PS: I was mistified by this 'putor til my 11 year old grandson took the time to show me how to run it. BLESS his little pea-picken-heart.

My regular scale is an RCBS/Pact electronic. I periodically check it against a 35 year old Lyman/Ohaus beam scale. This beam scale is now marketed as the RCBS 10-10 model. If I only had one, it would be the mechanical beam scale.

Good shooting and be safe.

LHB1,

The old Lyman/Ohaus and the RCBS 1010 are both Ohaus scales. I'm not sure which model of Lyman, but I know the RCBS 1010 is the old Ohaus 1010, still made by Ohaus. One of the major reasons I like it.

The Dillon scale is great, but it's not made by Dillon. I had a problem once where the scale was acting wacky when I was trickling powder and Dillon had me call the maker. I can't remember who it is right now but they said yep trickling powder fools the scale and screws the zero up. Other than that no problems. :)

i have a beam and an electronic scale. i pull my OLD, early 60s, Ohaus from the box and it is ready to work in jigtime. i thought i was an uncommon patient persdon till i got the electronic. so, i go with the 10 10 everytime. when i get the electronic set to go it is a marvel, but, the slighest bobble on my part and it is start all over time. the Ohaus is a matter of turning one thumbscrew to level it again.

if your budget wont stand the more expensive stuff, look at the Lee scale. it is inexpensive and it works, just a tad too jiggly for me

i frequently use the mechanical to check the electronic. my electronic is sorta retired as i have that need to keep it simple sydrome. different folks, different strokes.

I use a Dillon beam scale that came with my press (used 550B). It works great. Electronic scales are nice, but not necessary.

I say this a lot…
I use a RCBS “Chargemaster 1500 Combo” & I use check weights… the 20Gr weights check at 20Grs I check every 1-3 charges and do not see any real drift…

It is fast and trouble free… I recommend it highly

I've been thinking about maybe getting one of these.

http://www.jscale.com/product/vg20.html

They have links to online vendors they recommend who don't do the bait and switch tactic. I've seen this scale advertised for ~$80.

Anyone know anything about them?

Buy the Hornady beam scale. Longest length beam scale on the market. Responds to minute changes in charge. Best bang for the buck.

RCBS 10/10 would be my second choice.

Have had TWO DPS-II 1200 (both bought new and were not accurate or repeatable) and then bought the RCBS Chargemaster 1500 combos - one was WAY off, other was ok...but...you are just playing with your life...so...I went back to beam.

Beam scale and a powder measure is at least twice the speed as any of the electronic dispenser/scale combos...actually closer to three times faster.

One thing about the RCBS 750 Scale - it only has a 2 year warranty. I didn't know that at time of purchase - just assumed all RCBS products have a lifetime warranty. Don't know if the 2 year is just for this model or all their electronic scales. The 750 is made in China. Seems to be working well so far...
