Elevation settings for Winchester Model 94 rear sight

Hey all,

I've been searching the forum for a couple hours and can't find an answer...

What are the ranges for the different "steps" on the rear sight elevator?

Mine is a pre-64

I don't think there are any.

Those sights were not intended to be adjusted every time you come up with a different range shot.

You pick the load you intend to use, sight them in at 100 - 150 yards, and call it good.
The less you diddle with the elevation slide after that the better!

The maximum effective range of an open sighted 30-30 make sight changes unnecessary once sighted in.
If you sight it in about 2 1/2" high at 100 yards it will be zeroed at about 200.

And you can't reliably shoot a deer or such with open sights any further then that.

Iirc, each step is 50yds.

Maybe with one bullet weight, but not with another bullet weight.

There were different elevators used for the 94's. In Madis' "The Winchester Book", he mentions that the earlier type elevators had steps in 50 yard increments from 50 to 300 yards, tho I believe the steps only add up to 250 yards when started at 50 yards . I believe they had different elevators for different models. Some are identifiable by the patent dates on the side of them.

Yes, different bullet weights change the equation. Early ammo was 160 grain. I don't recall when they went to 170 and 150 grain loads.

Earlier rifle style sights had a sliding leaf in the rear sight to allow zeroing it for a particular step in the elevator. Later sights had the rear face of the sight adjustable with 2 screws.

And now there are 55 grain Sabot, 125, 130, and 160 LeverEvolution Spitzer loads too.

So I still contend the elevator step ranges cannot be quantified into nice little boxes anymore.
If they ever could.
