Elizabeth Edwards afraid of neighbor
She has never met `rabid Republican,' but wouldn't be nice

RALEIGH --Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home -- and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.

Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way near his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.

"I wouldn't be nice to him, anyway," Edwards said in an interview. "I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who, when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me."

But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.

"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."

Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.

Johnson, 55, acknowledges his Republican roots. But he takes offense to the suggestion he has purposefully left his property, including an old garage he leases for use as a car shop, in dilapidated condition.

Johnson said he has lived his entire life on the property, which he said his family purchased before the Great Depression. He said he's spent a lot of money to try and fix up the 42-acre tract.

"I have to budget. I have to live within my means," Johnson said. "I don't have millions of dollars to fix the place."

Johnson, who has posted a "Go Rudy Giuliani 2008" sign on a fence just 100 feet from the entrance to the Edwards' driveway, has criticized Edwards for the scale of their nearby home. The property and home, which includes an indoor basketball court, an indoor handball court and an indoor pool, is valued at $5.3 million.

The Edwardses are still putting the final touches on the property, which they purchased in 2003.

"I thought he was supposed to be for the poor people," Johnson said. "But does he ever socialize with any poor people? He doesn't speak to me."

Johnson said he has put his property on the market, in part blaming the high property taxes for his decision to leave. He also wants to move for another reason.

"I don't want to live somewhere where someone's always complaining about me," he said.

Tells me all I need to know about the situation.

Would you have THAT be your First Lady? :barf:

The Edwards are wealthy liberal elitists, who made their fortune off the misfortunes of others. They are judging someone whom they havent even met based upon their own shallow standards.

They consider ordinary people to be untrustworthy cockaroaches.
They aren't even smart enough to hide their contempt at election time.

But thats OK there is no chance of him getting the democratic nomination unless a meteor wiped out all the other candidates.

hes got guns and doesnt have a 5.3 million dollar house!!!!! thats nobody id want to live by

About the size of it.
Does'nt matter though, Edwards is'nt going anywhere in the election. Hell, he won't even debate ANY of the issues. As far as the Edwards family go, I would bet there's a lot of people that would'nt be welcome to socialize with them or their children (aka commoners, serfs, working stiffs). But I understand though, because I damn sure would'nt want them around me either. :neener:

I had the pleasure of having Edwards "represent me" while living in NC... he never showed up at work. never voted on ANY issue, complete abuse of his position. took all our money and couldn't even vote when issues were placed before him. if it was a real job he would have been booted out the door. I don't understand how politicians can get away with not doing their job. we all have to do our jobs, why don't they?:fire:

The Edwards are wealthy liberal elitists..

Ya think? Yikes!

Monty Johnson is just a lowly peasant, I guess.

Elizabeth Edwards is the scary person in this story.

Would you have THAT be your First Lady?

We already did, sort of. Hitlery was an absolute witch while she and bill were prez.

And the absurdity is that she honestly has a chance of being elected because of myopic women voters who will vote for this pig merely because it happens to be female.

May the Lord help this country.

::starts packing away his meteor gun:: So much for that idea.

Man oh man, with that large of a property, I'd be outside shooting off machine guns all day just to tick the Edwards family off

I wouldn't use machine guns. C'mon, the guy's not rich. Some friends and some Mosin Nagant M44's would do the same job. Plus the delay from the bolt action would strike a nerve. Set a timer and fire only every ten seconds for five hours. I'm sure that'd drive Ms Edwads up the wall.

Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way near his property.....................

............But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.

"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."

It's rubes like this that give the rest of us bad name. Obviously this maroon has no concept of the appropriate (and legal) use of deadly force. Look for him to be locked up and lose his firearms and the sooner the better IMO.

If what he had done was illegal, since it is obvioulsy documented, then he would have already been arrested, etc. As it is, the writer of this article had no intention of finding out if the act reported was indeed legal.
When a canidate's wife says she will not meet with a poor neighbor because they have a gun, and says she "wouldn't be nice to him", well, there's the fingernail sketch of the entire LIEberal leftist agenda. Eek.

Nothing like the rattle of full auto in the morning. Her attitude of someone she has never met, is nothing less than expected from a rich snob. Afterall it's for the children, and she must protect them. Mike

"myopic women voters who will vote for this pig merely because it happens to be female."

All the polls I've seen show her actually down with women compared to men.

That's because women are better judges of the character of other women then men are.

When a canidate's wife says she will not meet with a poor neighbor because they have a gun,
I would guess it is his life status, and not the gun, that worries her because she probably has armed security around her most of the time.

John Edwards on guns: 'They are about independence. For a lot of people who work hard for a living, one of the few things they have any control over is whether can buy a gun and hunt. They don't want people messing with that....'

(But calling them nuts without ever meeting with them because they own a gun is okay)

On poverty: 'There has been no discussion about 35 million American's living in poverty..... The Democratic presidential candidates have a moral repsonsibility to talk about it and do something about it, because it's wrong'

(Yeah, like drive them away because they are poor...)

And then on the other side you have the gun owner for RG? Ouch my brain is starting to hurt again....

I can't fault the Edward's. If there was a neighbor like Monty living near me I would not want to associate with him. The guy is obviously one brick short of a load. Maybe he is completely harmless, but all it would take is one moment where he losses it and hurts someone.

Elizabeth Edwards did come off as a bit snotty but who knows if the reporter had an agenda against her. The more I read this article the more it sounds like a hit piece against the Edward's. It might be done by the Republicans or maybe another Democrat contender.
