Make sure you use a well-constructed bullet in the 260 to 350 gr. range. The 300 gr. Harvester Gold PT is a good one to use in front of 110 gr. of Blackhorn 209 powder with CCI magnum primers. This powder substitute does not foul your barrel and there's no need for immediate cleanup. It seems to be more accurate without swabbing the barrel while taking multiple shots.

thanks for the info unfortunatly in idaho 209 primers and sabots are illegal to use me gun is equiped with a musket cap ignition all lead conicals are legal here

Don't use Blackhorn 209 powder with percussion caps; it won't ignite.

I suggest 460 grain No Excuse conicals. I used them for my CO elk hunt.

No elk but I have no doubt it would have accomplished the job. Option two would be Hornady FPB's. Use the the 350 grain version. these are widely available and probably would be easier to get a good groping.

I've also wondered about the various aerodynamic rifle bullets made by Hornady such as the 265 grn FTX for the 444 Marlin, or the 325 grn for the 45-70/450 Marlin.

i am am going with a 385gr hornady great plains with 100gr ffg. went to the range today fired 6 shots all touching at 50 yards. thanks to all for your suggestions
