I am looking for a good accurate load for Elk using the Nosler Partition in 180gr for my 308. The rifle is a Savage Varmint with 24" barrel with 1/10 twist. I have Varget and Win 748 powder on hand. I looked on Nosler website and they don't have load data for either powder. I usually load the 308 with SMK 168 and 42gr of Varget for target shoots.

Thanks I had looked there. They show a Speer Spitzer 180gr with start of 41gr Varget and max of 46.

I would have suggested IMR4895. I have a nice load for that.

Sig Fan,

Hodgdon #27 manual show:

Start load..........................................................Max load.........................
Varget ....41.0gr...2470 fps..41.200 CUP.....45.0C...2661 fps....48,100 CUP......
Win-748..No minimum given.....................46.5.....2610 fps.....48,500 CUP.....

The .308 starts loosing velocity when compared to the 30-06 pretty after the 165gr bullet, It just doesn't have the space to carry enough powder to push the 180gr and heavier bullets. I hope this is of some help.

I agree a controlled expansion 165 would be a better bullet weight for a .308.

180 Partition's will start taking up space better used for powder with a 165.

I will second the use of a 165gr. in the .308. My dad has used his for the past 45 years and swears by that bullet with 4895 powder. He has killed many mule deer and elk with that load, including a nice 7x7 bull.

I agree with the above and would even say that I reserve the 180's for larger than the 06. Thats not to say the 06 won't do it but the magnums are better with the larger bullets at distance and the 165 from a 308 or 06 at 300 or less is as good as gold on elk and deer.(considering a good bullet is used)
