Elk/Range rifle: 308 or 30-06?

Of course the aesthetics are a matter of opinion, ArmedBear, but it doesn't change the fact that the roll-over Monte Carlos, flared pistol grips and fat cheek pieces of the California stocks made popular by Weatherby are plain ugly! :) Seriously though, the extra material made them heavier and I don't like how they feel. Granted, new Weatherbys aren't as radical as those from the fifties & sixties. I just don't like Monte Carlos, how they look or how they feel.

Modern Classic stocks let me lean into the rifle a bit and mount my scopes low. I used an early model Bushnell with large bells that required high rings for clearance. I scrimped and saved until I could afford to order it through my father's gun shop. With the scope sitting up that high, I kept getting whacked unless I was real careful. I had the eye relief set right, it was the height. I couldn't get rid of that Bushnell fast enough. I got a Leupold 3x9 with a 40 or 42mm objective, mounted it with low rings and never had any trouble again. Everyone is different, of course, but my sons also find a modern classic more comfortable to shoot. I can throw any of my rifles to my shoulder with my eyes closed and when I open them, the sights are close to being on target.

Uncle Mike, no offense but my instinct at the thought of "adding an (nylon) adjustable cheek piece" is to warn loved ones to "Paddle faster! I hear banjo music!"

....and this is why your eye needs to be in line with the center line of the optic...
Banjo music or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to obtain a proper cheek weld.

Hold your head up high, and the rifle will recoil around your head(eye whack!), your head won't move with the rifle...bad!

I don't like the nylon cheek piece on a wood stock, I would change the stock, or the scope, if I had to mount the scope were I could not get the proper weld.

However, if all options fail, and you want it right, it's a cheekpiece of some sort...the strap on ones don't look that bad on the wooden stocks.

I've only heard of one deer laughing at a guy with a add-on cheek piece...and the guy shot em'!

BTW...no offense taken.

Saturno V -
The 30-06 will give you a bit of extra velocity (especially if you reload) and a wider range of bullet weight (up to 250 gr.!!!)

I can get you 250gr loads for a .308 win if you want them. Modern reloading ver.2 by Richard Lee has load data for it.

I like my .308 for near anything you can hunt in the lower 48. Just my preference, but the ammo is readily available virtually anywhere I go, the recoil is very manageable and I trust my CZ 550FS in the accuracy department. If hunting at longer ranges, or for larger game I can always go to my .338 Win Mag. All in all the .308 is pretty close to the ideal hunting round in my way of thinking. But then everyone has their pet rifle/cartridge.

Uncle Mike, you're spot on about holding your head high and recoil- it's a lesson I learned the hard way and have never forgotten. After my first experience with scope with large bells requiring high mounts, I've never understood the fascination with 50mm objectives. However, I find that higher mounts are needed on flat top ARs and I can comfortably use large objectives. Now I'm saving up my lunch money for a Bushmaster Varminter and an AR A4 in 308.

Now in addition doe scent, No UV designer cammies and rattle horns, the modern day deer hunter will have to add the funny looking strap on cheek piece to the list so they can shoot the love-sick critter while it's helpless with laughter. You're a marketing GENIUS! (Yes, I'm funnin' ya. About the strap on part, I was serious about the marketing thing)

What were we originally talking about? Oh yeah- Elk! Used to have my sons shoo them off the front lawn so we could get to the Jeep in the morning.

I have a letter from Ross Seyfried. He says a good 168 grain bullet from a 30-06 is an excellent choice for elk. It'd probably be ok out of a 308 too

Hehehehe...maybe, just maybe...we'll market them...say a 50 50 split!

Think about it, when are you most vulnerable....when your locked onto a hot little cutie or rolling in the floor laughing you a$$ off! lol
This could be big...like Adam said to Eve, stand back, I have no idea how big this is going to get!

Your blessed to have to shoo the Elk critters off your lawn...one could only hope for such an annoyance!

I don't hunt Elk, but I can't see why the 30-06 168gr wouldn't do the trick...?

Saturno V - I don't have my manual right in front of me. I'll check when I get home tomorrow. IF I recall correctly, it is pretty close to that. I can eek more out of the -06, but the .308 in its own right ain't too shabby. It is probably closer to 2200 fps, but that is still a good deal of power. I know, 200 fps is a big difference.

The 06 moving out at 2281 fps with a 250 gr pill, the .308 moving out at 2142 fps using a 250 gr pill. I am showing a 140 fps difference in my load data for max loads. There may be hotter loads out there that reach 2300 fps, but I don't have that.

Uncle Mike, I used to get a kick ribbing my father about using doe scent and a feeder in Texas to harvest deer.

It'd be like this, you start to get hungry for something greasy, so you think to yourself "Hey, I heard they have a real hottie at the drive thru at the Dairy Queen" and when you pull up while she leans out the window with the top buttons of her blouse undone and you're staring into the Promised Land thinking of playing motorboat and while she hands you a bagfull cheeseburgers and french fries along with a chocolate shake with whipped cream and a cherry on top, they whack ya!

I read an interview with a guide from Montana. He stated he wpuld rather see somoene show with a well worn 308 than a brand spankin' new 300 Win mag.
