Elk Rifle

if you reload the 280 ackley improved would be a fine choice.
Finding ammo should be easy with 270 win, 7mm mag, 30-06 and 300 win mag.

I have seen a bunch of elk shot with .300 Winchester Mags, .338 Winchester Mags.,
and some of the Weatherby calibers like the .300 and the .340. I have seen a lot
that were shot with 30/06s and the like. The bigger magnum calibers seem to do
a better job than the ordinary deer rifles. That ain't saying that a well placed shot
with any powerful rifle won't do the job.

I'd vote 338WM and if it's to much recoil, put on a soft recoil pad and a brake.

I ordered the rifle yesterday, I ordered the Browning BLR 300 Winchester magnum with a straight stock and this should give me time to get to know the rifle and prepared for the recoil and what not, a buddy of mine said he had a boss muzzle break on his a bolt in the same caliber and said it tamed the recoil.
If I am not mistaken a muzzle break makes the rifle even louder especially for any guides around you?

I wouldn't worry about a muzzle break, they do make things harder on your ears and anybody that happens to be close by.
Work with the rifle, if the factory loads prove to be to much for you, then try some handholds from the bottom of the charts, or even the youth load data.
You'll probably be alright, keeping in mind this is a hunting rifle and as such shooting 5
-6 rounds at one setting will be more than will hopefully ever happen when out in the field actually hunting.

The OP has made his choice and has purchased his elk rifle. He has made a solid choice. Assuming that his rifle has no accuracy issues from the factory he's equipped himself well for a western elk hunt. All that is left to do is practice, get in shape and start shopping for some proper clothing/mountain equipment.

Since the rifle issue has been solved lets close this here. If interested the OP could open another thread on other equipment needed for the out west elk hunt.:)
