With the King Of 2 Miles quickly approaching we held a highly productive team practice in Raton, NM. Targets were available out to 2.05 Miles (See the Video).

All 5 shooters of the Applied Ballistics ELR Shooting Team scored hits on the 2 mile target. 3 of the 5 shooters scored hits in mock competition (3 shots only, under time limit). This year has more than doubled in the number of venues and events. We have also been able to add some consistency to shooting past one mile. The trickle effect is real here. The more accurate we are at ELR distances, the easier close range shooting will become. Advances in technology, equipment etc. It all trickles down. Check out this video showing from preparation to impact.

This is a 360 degree video. You can click and drag the video around in a circle to see the entire scene. From the time the shot is fired, count to 6 seconds. That's roughly the Time of Flight on this shot.

Very cool indeed. Hearing the adjustments was crazy. What rifles and optics were used? Thanks for the post and congratulations. Bet ya'll had a ball.

Some days I wish I lived in another part of the country. Great work you're doing there.

You are always welcome to join me here. I am only 20 minutes from 1500 yards. 4 hours to a couple miles. 7 1/2 hours to this range at Raton. Not a bad place to enjoy life ;)

As a youngster and through my teen years growing up in Dallas, we'd (family) pass through Raton on our way to a family cabin outside of Lake City, Colorado. Beautiful area as I recall.

How the heck were you doping the wind at over 2 miles out or anywhere in between for that matter? Were your spotters at the target (or wherever they were) making wind calls too? How big was the target?

I've been reading about the .375 Lethal Magnum and I saw a photo comparing it to the .338 Lapua Mag and .375 Chey-Tac.... :what:

I have 18" steel targets at 1,050 yards and 1,300 yards at my house with no fancy wind reading lasers and no spotters, so I'm thrilled with first round hits using my anemic .338 LM. My targets would be a chip shot for you guys. I would wish the AB team luck but you clearly don't need it. This is great stuff for sure. :)

How far does the bullet stay transonic? What kind of barrel lengths do guys run? And did i miss target size?

We are using a Ringer. Our Teams Coach is Emil Praslick. Well known for his ability to call wind. He has 18 National and 2 World Titles as the Coach of AMU. He has also been the coach of many teams for the US Rifle Team. He was watching a couple of different zones to the target and taking an estimated/decades of experience guess.

Bryan actually put up a 0.6 MOA Shot Group on a 0.95 MOA target. 3 Shots at 2 miles.

This is highly dependent on the location and atmospherics at the time. For this situation the bullet went transonic at around 3100 yards. It struck the target at about Mach 0.9 give or take a little.

If my math is correct that's a 22.7" group on a 35.9" target.... :what: I don't know how you can even see a 36" target at over 2 miles, even on a perfect day with no mirage. Amazing!

Incredible.
My eyesight won't allow me to play anywhere near those distances, but I love watching the pros tap the long range targets.

Wow........ That is wild..... Thanks for posting. Gonna be fun going back to those other links. My long range target experience has never been farther than 500 meters and that stuff is a whole different ballgame.

I read a story about a military sniper effectively shooting a mile with a 50 cal. rifle. I thought that was amazing.

This is exponentially way beyond that. I didn't think something like this was even possible.

Cartridge is amazing also.

We are working hard to make ELR a possibility. Researching equipment, techniques, ballistics etc. The ways of the past were that it could be months or years before this kind of research was made public and shared. We aim to take what used to be months or years, and share it in days and weeks. This was published within 48 hours.

We want to make shooting 1 mile and beyond possible for any skill level. No easy task, but it starts with sharing knowledge. Which is the mission of ELR Central and the AB ELR Team:

“Our mission is to advance the state of the art in Extreme Long Range rifle shooting by: sharing knowledge, promoting awareness, and encouraging best practices within the ELR community.”
– Bryan Litz

I know it sounds a lot like a sales pitch, but there is nothing to "sell" except knowledge in this endeavor.

you really don't need the 338 LM to make hits at 1050 yds. I have seen it done even with a 223. a 243, 260 rem even a 308 will do it

Yep. I've scored hits at 1,040 yards with a .308 with a 20" barrel (shooting 175gr FGMM). I couldn't get hits further than that, but apparently lighter bullets work better. I've used a .260 Rem out to 1,400 yards or so with no issues other than poor wind calls.

Now you are talking Derek lol. I love the 260. how long was your barrel what bullets did you use

The rifle belonged to @Zak Smith - he was my instructor and I borrowed his rifle for a few hours.

IIRC it was a 24" barrel shooting 134gr 139gr Scenars, but that was a while back. Wyoming is great for long-range shooting. Georgia? Not so much, so I don't do this as much as I'd like to.
