So lately I've been putting some thought into getting myself prepared for an emergency. Since I'm in CA, the first emergency that I would envision is an earthquake...and the second a revolution against our incompetent politicians. What does everyone have stockpiled away for protection in the event that you have to take care of you and your own? The common belief around here is that I should be able to take care of myself for 3 days, since that is the time that it would take to get emergency services up and running, but I would like to prepare for a Katrina scale disaster here in CA that really disrupts civilization or even a government meltdown scenario. How many magazines, rounds of ammo and spare parts should I have on hand? I'm somewhat knowledgeable about handguns and I know why I've selected mine, but what rifle should I look getting for this kind of situation? What pack should I throw all this stuff in? I would think such a pack should be able to hold the stuff I need but yet able to grab and go if need be.

The thing you'll be in need of most, is intestinal fortitude. I'd stock up on that.

tommygunn, that's exactly why I asked. I need advice on how to tame myself!

Check the survival blogs for advice. You'll find water more important than weapons.
