I am considering getting an EMP 9 for CCW purposes. Here in CA we have an issue that most of you do not have. Weapons must be listed by S/N on the permit. In addition, some Sheriffs departments limit the number of guns that they will list. The sheriff of my county is only willing to list three guns on the permit. I currently have an airlite J frame that I pocket carry. That is pretty much it's only use, as my other two guns are what I carry when I can carry something larger. Currently these guns are a 3" SP101 and a 4" Trooper. I will be droping the Trooper soon from the permit and replacing it with a full size 1911 .45. I would like to keep the SP101 on the permit. I really like the EMP and would not use it primarily as a pocket gun, but I need a pocket gun for those rare times when nothing else will work.
So does anyone use an EMP as a pocket gun? How well does this work for you?

A pocket EMP? uh, you better have some BIG ass reinforced pockets.

the EMP is a belt gun. it is NOT a pocket gun.

Agreed. My EMP9mm goes on the hip. It is like my H&K P7. Roughly the same size and shape. If you want a pocket gun, probably need to go more like a small 380 unless you have really big pockets.

Having owned two EMPs (as well as a number of other 1911s) I will agree with the above.

My LCP is a pocket pistiol.

My PM9 is a pocket pistol.

The EMP is not a pocket pistol. No 1911 is a pocket pistol, unless you are a 325 pound dude who wears overalls.

That j-frame you already have is as big as I will consider for pocket carry.
My pocket carry favorite is either LCP / P3AT.

I have a EMP 9mm and it's a nice pistol, recoil is mild with standard pressure ammunition; but, it sure ain't a pocket gun.

The two methods of carry where I utilize the EMP are either in a Smartcarry or appendix IWB.

I do not like the EMP magazine sticking past the frame with oversize baseplate, hinders concealment; there is a person on the 1911 forum log man that cut them to be flush fitting, just a FYI should you get the EMP.

Rohrbaugh R9.

I have an EMP and in my opinion it is too large for pocket carry, maybe cargo pocket carry, but not front or rear pocket carry. If you like the 1911 style, wait a bit for next year 2012 and Sig will have out the Sig P938 which is the 9mm version of their P238. I hope this helps. God Bless :)

I've heard of people who can pocket/ankle carry 3 inch 1911s. I've never actually met one...

For the vast majority of people the EMP is too big to pocket carry. I can't do it with mine, my J frame is the biggest I can go.

I have an EMP 9mm and could not even think about pocket carrying this either as many have posted, it is too big. It is similar in size to the Ruger LC9 and Kimber Solo; not pocket guns. There are many more pocket guns smaller than the EMP.
