Beware all Mil-Spec old rifles IF they have not been vetted with a go/no go gauge , to see if the chamber is safe to shoot.

SAMMI Go/ No-Go gauges are pretty useless on Enfields, which used Mil-Spec gauges. I researched the specs and ended up having a Mil-Spec field gauge custom made. Essentially the SAMMI no-go and field gauges are the equivalent to the Mil-Spec Go and No-Go gauges.

For an easy way to overcome recoil on a No.5 without affecting its originality, ie, it can be put back to original, see a thread I made herehttp://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=591979. Something too that no-one else has mentioned afaik is that No.5s were painted rather than blued or parkerized, the better to resist the hot steamy climate found in the CBI where they were designed for, the rifles designation was scribed into the painted finish by hand with a carbide vibrating scriber on the left of the action. Even where they have worn the paint will show around the metal that shows thru, see the butt socket & butt pad retainer on my one in the other thread.
Steve.

I have had two of them, both with serial numbers like 75 apart and mint condition. I found a home for both because of the recoil. Even shooting from the hip the recoil caused the bolt knob to ram into the knuckle of my trigger finger. With military ammo I found the accuracy to not be up to what I would have liked. They are though a nice looking little rifle.
