The local gun shop has some Enfields of various makes and models, including one marked Property US Govt, going for about $300 a piece. Is that decent, cheap or absurd? Thanks for the help! I'd like the US Govt one in particular.
I wouldn't pay it. I've been tempted by two different unissued No4Mk1's for $319 and that was probably a good price, but I wouldn't pay that for one with a lot of miles on it. Savage might be worth a little more, but are you gonna put it in a rack as a collector or shoot it?
I picked up an excellent No4-Mk1 for right at $230 at a spring '08 gun show, which is neither a bargain, nor a rip-off. It was priced right at value and it's an excellent shooter.
The U.S. Property marked Savages, however, in general, seem to be somewhat more desirable and a "matching" one in really good condition, including the bore, would probably fetch much more than that.
GunBroker prices can hit both ends of the spectrum, but below are some links which should give you an idea with what you're dealing.
