Engaging an AR shooter with handgun

Distance shooting with a handgun is simply application of the basic fundamentals of marksmanship. Sight alignment, trigger squeeze, and breathing. There are a few tricks that can help like bracing the back of your hand against a vertical surface or shooting from a prone position.

For the people saying just run if the shooter is at range; what if your path to safety is over open ground exposed to the shooter? Running then with the badguy not suppressed or better yet injured is just asking for a rifle round in the back. Of course having a front sight that fills the rear notch makes distance shooting easier, but can slow down target acquisition at close range.

Another scenario is you having loved ones closer to the shooter then you, but not in your line of fire and you needing to provide cover fire so they can escape.

"Fast-forward again to Brownwood, Texas, in 2012. A man went berserk and began killing his neighbors. When the first responding officer arrived, the killer pinned him down with a .30-30 rifle. Armed citizen Vic Stacy shot the gunman from some 65 yards away with a Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver, wounding him badly enough that the officer could take control and finish the fight, killing the killer. Far from becoming a defendant, the heroic citizen was presented with a fine rifle by appreciative Texas Governor Rick Perry."

Plus I remember him writing about a Military policemen with a M9 stopping an attacker at 95 yards with his pistol.

Don't need to be a McGivern to make precise shots.

I think the probl6is that man/ shooters don't or won't even try. Hitting a target at 100 ads is not that hard.

I praise you for your honesty, sir.

I think I should stress that ordinary citizens are under no OBLIGATION to fire on a mass killer. You should take cover and locate the shooter. If you CAN get a shot at him, you are justified because you are trying to save the lives of others.

Now if he is directly attacking you and your family, THEN you can be reasonably said to have an obligation to protect yourself and your family.

I always figured I would take cover and hold at the low ready if in a interior building shooter(s) real life/death situation and that's what I've told our son was his highest priority. If children are involved that could be different but who knows?

You know, when we discussed this back in 2012, it was quite interesting (link in post 13). There was the usual new confusion, but it was obvious Stacey had done some good with a pistol against a rifle at distance.

While true, he was never charged with anything, Vic Stacey was cuffed, detained, and did have to go through some due process where upon he was no-billed by the grand jury.

Strangely, Stacey passed up his Bushmaster AR15 when he responded to gunfire. Strange decision.

You sir are type of man I would be proud to stand with against the shooter

You also have the possibility of the guy with a rifle being unnerved by the person closing in on him especially if he's firing while advancing.

At best, you would have to have cover to get in close, as trying to engage from >25 yds with a handgun would put you at a great disadvantage.

Lesson learned---if taking action get close, use surprise and take a head shot.

IMHO the closer the distance the less disadvantage of having "only a pistol" comes into play. Sure the attackers weapon could be more devastating than yours but it's still reasonable to try and stop the threat. Much different than an attacker at a distance with cover and a rifle.

You got to use cover to close the distance and know the limits of the handgun your carrying.

Well, the officer with a pistol went up against a shooter with a rifle and got in close and got shot as a result, apparently multiple times. He tried to use cover, but the problem with cover at short distance is that the bad guy simply walked around the cover and shot the officer. Sadly, the officer was killed. It should be pointed out that when you close the distance, you are perceived as a much greater threat then when you are farther away.
