I've seen these Enidine Hydraulic Recoil Buffers advertised online for $79.95. Here's the description:

Can anybody comment on whether these work and are they a good value? My kid wants to shoot the 308 but the recoil is a little too much.

Don't know first hand.
I do know they make four different models.

Just make sure you get the correct .308 model for your stock, not one of the .223 ones, or the wrong stock type .308 one.
