EOTech vs. Aimpoint

I have both an EOTech and a Aimpoint for my ARs. Personally, I prefer the EOTech for target acquisition. That said, I wish the EOTech had the battery life of the Aimpoint. Why can't EOTech produce a holographic with Aimpoint-like battery life? Is there something specific about holographic sights that make this harder than a red dot sight?

I have an Eotech 512 on a AR15 Bushmaster and an Aimpoint on a AK47. I have switched them back and forth but like how they are finally mounted in this configuration. I like the Eotech with the AA batteries and put up with the short life. But they have been in for almost a year but I also shut them off as soon as I am done shooting. Guess what, I also shut the Aimpoint off after shooting so it should last my life time. Why leave these things turned on when they are not being used makes no sense to me.

My experience with EOTech 511's, of which I've had 4, has been less than stellar regarding battery life. I love everything else about the sight, but the battery life is a joke. I always turn off the power when I am done shooting, but no matter what, I find myself changing batteries (stupid, expensive "N"-batteries, no less) every 3 or 4 months, with only a couple of hours of use in between.

I have a 512 model, now, and I'm hoping the AA batteries last longer. That said, I have an Aimpoint Comp M as well, and it's nice, but the dot isn't as bright as I'd like on a really sunny day. If only they would make a hybrid of sorts...

I'm no expert by any means but I believe that the difference in battery life is because the EOTech uses laser light and the Aimpoint uses an LED.

I leave my Aimpoint on all the time. I'm curious to see just how long it will last so I just turned it on 10 one day and marked it on the calender.

Eotech told me the reason my 511 N-Batteries run down in storage is because the sight is never really turned off.

Even with the switch Off, the circuit board stays in "standby" power mode like a cell-phone or something.

Since the W&E adjustments are mechanical, and not in electronic memory, they could not tell me why it must stay in standby mode with the switch off though.

All he could tell me is, thats the way the electronics engineers who designed the circuit board did it, and he didn't know why.

Yes Eotech using a laser to emit the holographic sight pattern where Aimpoint uses and LED. I personally like the Eotech more for its target acquisition as well but I had to go with Aimpoint because of the 10 year warranty vs 2 year Eotech warranty... the 50,000 hour battery live vs the less than 600 hour battery life of Eotech... and the fact that Aimpoint Reps are known to throw their aimpoints against walls and they still hold zero. if SHTF i want my sight to last years no months.
