I Just purchased my AR-15..

I have had one before so I am already familiar with the operations, sights, etc etc...

I posted earlier about which Rifle to get so now that I have it I want a scope for it..

The purpose with be Home Defense? Shooting out to 100yrds is the usual shooting distance.

I will list my choices...Please once again Blunt Feedback!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

1.EOTech HDS Holographic Diffraction Sight
2.EOTech EOT-512 Holographic Sight
3.The Aimpoint® Comp3 Sight
4.Leatherwood Hi-Lux 50mm Red Dot Rifle Sight

2. EOTech EOT-512 Holographic Sight

I went with the EOTech 512.65 for my M4orgery, Co-witnessed with the Iron Sights and zeroed in @ 100 yards.

My A2 has no sights other than the Iron and is Zeroed in @ 200 yards.

Bsed on your usage for QCB & HD I would get the one IMHO that is set up for the quickest acquisition for target.

1 & 2 are the same thing. Rather, all of EOTech's sights are the HDS, the 512 is just a particular version (AA, no NVG button).

I went with the Acog for my A2 20" and an Eotech 552 for the M4. I am happy with both.

As somebody else whose eye sight isn't what it used to be, I find a sight with magnification to be more useful than an unmagnified red dot. However, if you are set on a red dot then I would go with the Eotech or Aimpoint - whichever better suits your personal preferences.

I like the Trijicon sights, Reflex to be exact. I cringe at the thought of having dead batteries at the most inopportune time. :D

My eye sight isn't what it used to be - that said, when I look through that black peep at that giant black post at a small black target 100 yards away with the sun's glare reflecting on the peep .... I just can't see 'nuthin!

I'm in the same boat with the bad eyes (mostly astigmatism for me). But first, what's the difference between 1 & 2? I thought all their products were Holographic Diffraction Sights (HDS), marketed as Holographic Weapons Sights (HWS).

2.EOTech EOT-512 Holographic Sight

I recently purchased both an Eotech 512-A65 (as well as a Russian Kobra Russian red dot) to help overcome vision issues. For anything defensive from 10-200 yards, I think the Eotech would work great. The 65moa circle is very quick, and the dot seems very precise (unless it's turned up too high for the environment).

Now the comparison: The Eotech was about twice as expensive as the Kobra. Where the Eotech is quick, the Kobra seems more versatile (4 reticles to choose from, on the fly). For Deer hunting using Sabot slugs, out to 100 or so yards, I'm going to use the Eotech. For my AK I've got the Kobra mounted on an Ultimak gas tube mount. If the Kobra starts to seem slow, I might put the Eotech on to compare.

For target ID or more precise shooting past 200 yards I'd start thinking about something like the (pricey) ACOG sights, or one of the magnifiers that can be used with the Eotech.

I really like the EO-Tech and Aimpoint...could we compare those 2 for a moment?

They are both good. It really is a personal preference thing. Both have their fans and their detractors.

The EOTech is a bit faster and has wider field of view.
The Aimpoint has a sharper dot and a much greater battery life.

Both of them work well, they both can be cowitnessed nicely, and both have magnifiers available.

Your best best would be to find both locally and see which one looks better to you.

for home defense , which one powers up faster and is easier to get into action ?
You turn them on and there they are. It's not like they have to boot up or anything.

You named the rest, now here's the best...Trijicon ACOG 4X all the way!

I know it aint like booting up a pc , but I see plenty of folks having trouble getting their EO's turned on during matches while on the line ( though they could be using Halosights cant recall ) , when you need it in the middle of the night , how fast is it into action during darkness is what I was wondering. Which is easier ?

would the Docter Optic be a good alternative ?

just thinking out loud as I have been looking at the same setup for my home defense AR. Looking forward to opinions.

I tried every scope I own on my AR. Two I really liked.

One is a 4x40 Nikon Buckmaster. The Nikon is really good for 25 yards and out. They are still available at the SWFA sample list site for around $100. I think I'll be buying another one.

The other is a Trashco 6x24x42 Varmint scope. It's a pretty good scope for $75. I was blazing away at popcans at 250 yards a couple of weeks ago. However, some of the AR crowd questioned putting a $75 scope on a $1200 rifle so it was removed and reinstalled on a $109 rifle.

I use a Larue SPR mount so I can take the scope on and off and still hold zero.

For close up stuff and HD I put the carry handle back on.

My eyes are aging also - sucks getting old. Even though my down range world looks so much better with at least 4x power....

Home Defense = EOTech

I have an EOTech on top of an FN FS2000 - I would never want to come up against this combination. Mine is the one with the built in ARMS mount, it keeps zero nicely.

Be safe, BSR

I am in the same boat as you. I recently purchased my first AR and my eyes aren't what they used to be. I'm probably going to buy the EOtech 512. I have used an Acog and it was awesome. It was just too expensive for me. I don't have any experience with the aimpoint, but I'm sure it is a great optic.

I have an EOTech 512 and think it is a great sight.

If you're serious about using the AR-15 as a home/farm/ranch defense arm, this is a great choice for CQ combat. Red dot visible in bright light (it's adjustable), quick target acquisition, both eyes open for full peripheral vision, no parallax.

Also, I was surprised at how precise it could be shooting out to 50 yards and beyond. Certainly not as much so as a scope with magnification, but as or more accurate than the iron sights and easier to use.
